Dorothea K. (Kozmadis) Solomonides, 90, of West Hartford, returned to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family on December 21, 2018. Dorothea was born in Constantinople, Turkey on January 14, 1928; daughter of the late Maria (Serafimides) and Michael (Jizitoglu) Cosmades. As a child she crossed the Bosporus daily from Asia to Europe to go to school and learned to speak Turkish, Greek, Armenian and English fluently. Dorothea became an exceptional seamstress and fashion designer and worked for many years at the Lucy Baltzell Shop. She handcrafted many beautiful outfits for famous clients such as long-time WTIC radio host Jean Colbert and renowned cellist Raya Garbousova. In 1957, Dorothea came to the U.S. to visit her brother Rev. Thomas Cosmades, pastor of Clearwater Baptist Church in Kooskia, ID. She subsequently traveled to Providence, RI to visit her aunt, where she met her husband Constantin A. (Alex) Solomonides. They were married in 1958 and settled in Hartford, CT.Dorothea was a woman of great faith; a loving and dedicated mother of quiet strength. Her Greek name, which means "Gift of God", best describes her as one who unceasingly demonstrated Christ's sacrificial love to her family. Upon the news of her passing, many tributes poured in that best describe her: "an amazing, faithful woman", "a beautiful person, inside & out", "a wonderful lady & kind soul", "a vital, vibrant & engaging woman", "an intelligent person who could fix anything… from broken relationships to sewing machine repair", "a joy to know her… many memories of her smile & warm greetings whenever we saw her", "a great friend & special lady… we will all miss her very much", "a sweet mom who shared kindness & joy with us… with a little wit thrown in for fun!"Dorothea is survived by her sons Michael A. Solomonides and his wife Karen of Farmington; Jason B. Solomonides and his wife Kerry of Cromwell; her grandchildren Michael A. Solomonides Jr., Melissa M. Solomonides, Alexis M. Solomonides and Keira E. Solomonides; her sister Irini (Cosmades) Mungrides in Greece and many close nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Thomas Cosmades in Germany and her husband of 51 years, C.A. Solomonides. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 10:00 am in the Meetinghouse at First Church of Christ, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield.
