Dorothy Kaplan McCarty Obituary
Dorothy Kaplan McCarty, a lifelong resident of Suffield, died June 6, 2018. She was born December 20, 1930 in Springfield, MA, to the late Mary Baron Kaplan and Walter K. Kaplan. Before graduating from Suffield High School in 1948, Dorothy worked at the Suffield Pharmacy and at Suffield Town Hall. After her graduation from Bay Path Junior College in 1950, Dorothy was employed by The Hartford Electric Light Company as an editor for its magazine The Illuminator and received the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge medal for her work there. While working in Hartford, Dorothy met her husband Richard R. (Dick) McCarty. They were married in 1956 and made their home in Suffield where they raised their four children. Dorothy leaves a legacy of service to the town she loved. She was President of both Bridge Street and Spaulding School PTO's, was active in the Suffield Players (both onstage and off-), and served on the Board of the Kent Memorial Library, the Sacred Heart Church Building Committee, the Democratic Town Committee, and the Suffield Ethics and Charter Revision Committees. She was a Board Member of the former Enfield Federal Savings Bank, and was one of the first women members inducted into the Suffield Rotary Club, where she was eventually named a Paul Harris Fellow. Dorothy is perhaps best known for her service as Town Clerk of Suffield, an office she held for 19 years. During her tenure, she oversaw the Town's record-keeping through a time of great change, and as a testament to her efficiency and effectiveness in the position, was ultimately endorsed by both political parties in subsequent elections. Dorothy will be remembered as an avid theatre-goer, and she enjoyed music of all kinds, especially as a season ticket-holder of the Hartford Symphony. She enjoyed traveling, was a voracious reader, and loved playing golf with her husband and fellow "Ladies of the Evening." One of her proudest achievements was the hole-in-one she shot at the Suffield Country Club. Dorothy will also be remembered as a devoted mother who instilled in her children a love of learning and the arts. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband and brothers Lawrence and Thomas and is survived by her brother Walter Kaplan of Mendon, MA, and her children: Betsy Carr and her husband Patrick of Langhorne, PA; Kit Kassel and her husband Paul of Geneva, IL; Richard McCarty and his wife Anne of Plantsville, CT; and Margaret McCarty and her husband Mark Baumhardt of Wakefield, MA. She leaves nine grandchildren: Maggie, Brendan, and Matthew Carr; Sarah and Mary Kassel; Rich and Sam McCarty; and Zachariah and Alexandra Baumhardt, as well as her sisters-in-law Irene, Janice, and Colleen Kaplan, niece, nephews, godchildren and many other family members and friends. Her family will receive friends Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 4-8 PM at Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. N. (Rt. 159), Suffield. Family and friends may gather Monday, June 11, 2018 at 9:00 AM at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 AM, at Sacred Heart Church, Suffield. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Suffield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Kent Memorial Library, the Suffield Historical Society, or the Suffield Land Conservancy.
