In Memoriam: Longtime member Elizabeth (Betty) Schmitt – October 15, 2020
Betty's obituary in the Hartford Courant and the Glastonbury Citizen surprised us all.
We had just come to know her all over again. Although a longtime and faithful supporter of our local league, she had been out of sight – busy with the Glastonbury Historical Society, Glastonbury PIP (Partners in Planting), and Land Heritage Coalition. Not unusual choices in Glastonbury. More recently, with the 100 Year Anniversary of the League of Women Voters, and the concurrent 70th anniversary of our local league, she had developed keen interest in the historical events connected with woman's suffrage.

On September 26, the GHS organized a gathering, jointly with our LWVGL, to celebrate Connecticut's September 14, 1920 Ratification of the 19th Amendment. We gathered at Glastonbury's central Green where we cheered and were cheered by passing traffic. Betty joined us in costume and festive mood, seated at a table, accompanied by Ellen Carter, our treasurer and Voter Service 2020 chair. The November edition of Glastonbury Life in its photo feature, 'Slice of LIFE: Suffragists are on the march,' carries a wonderful picture of Betty (no. 3) and other participants, by photographer Lisa Brisson. We are thankful for this extra remembrance.
