Gerald M. "Jerry" Crotty, 92, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2017. Born in Quebec City, Quebec Province, Canada to the late Robert and Mary (Hallessey) Crotty, Jerry was raised in Hartford, where he attended the schools of St. Peter, the Cathedral of St. Joseph and Hartford Public High School. Upon graduation from high school he was invited (non-declinable) to be a member of the U.S. Navy, serving two years in the South Pacific during WWII with the Navy's "Fighting Seebees". When he returned home Jerry worked, for a time, in one of Hartford's "infamous factories" and then went off to Providence College, where he was a member of the Harkins Society and was presented with the Golden Friar Award. After graduation he resided in Bloomfield for 60 years and during that time was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. There he served as a Eucharist Minister, Lector, Altar Server, and as a Charter Member of the Parish Council, serving one term as President. He was part of the original group commissioned as Eucharist Ministers. Among the many honors he received during his lifetime, Jerry was the recipient of the St. Joseph Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation and was honored by St. Paul II who named him a Papal Knight of St. Gregory. He was a 50 year member of Serra International, serving the local club twice as President, District Governor and two terms as Regional Director. He was a member of the International Nominating and Long Range Committees. He was elected and served several years as a Board Member of Serra International and the Foundation Boards, including a term as President of the latter. Prior to retirement he worked for Connecticut General (CIGNA) and was President for one term of the CG Club. On a local level he was a member of St. Agnes Home, serving one term as Chairperson, the Development Committee of the Sisters of St. Joseph, a member of the final Board of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Treasurer of Interfaith Homes of Bloomfield, a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of The Holy Family Retreat League having attended over thirty retreats. Several cousins survive him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15 at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield followed by burial in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. His family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers or memorial donations, Jerry asks that you invite a priest or vowed religious to dinner. For online condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com
