Gregory P. Arvantely Obituary

Gregory P. Arvantely, of Enfield, CT, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014, at his home in Enfield after a brief illness. Born in Thompsonville on September 1, 1932, to Peter and Catherine Arvantely, Greg was a lifelong engineer. He graduated from Enfield High School in 1950, and regularly joined his local classmates for monthly breakfasts up to the time of his death. Greg received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1954 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and began work for RCA in Camden, New Jersey. In 1964 he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for IBM, primarily on defense work projects, until his retirement in 1990. At that time, he returned to Enfield to be closer to family and friends. Greg was baptized at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Enfield and remained a congregant until it closed its doors in December of 2013. Greg's technical and problem-solving skills gained him a reputation for expertise in all areas. The sudden failure of any appliance, TV, or computer would be answered with, "Call Uncle Greg!" He kept current with science-fiction literature and the newest cinematic releases, equally versed with the latest Star Trek installments as he was with the silent-era films of Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy. Simply known as "Uncle" to many in his family, Greg was a devoted and dedicated presence in the lives of his nieces and nephews. With the passing of years, he played the same role to a new generation of grandnieces and grandnephews. He remained a constant pillar of friendship and support for his brother, Attorney Thomas Arvantely of Enfield, and for his sister, Judge Thelma Santos and her husband, Hubert, of West Hartford. In addition to his brother and sister, Greg is survived by their children: Catherine Arvantely, her husband Steve and son Maxwell; Peter Arvantely, his wife Julie and children Zachary, Callie, and Eli; Stephanie (Santos) Adams, her husband Nate and son Christopher; and Peter Santos. His family will receive relatives and friends at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield Friday, August 29 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 30 at 11:00 a.m, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's King Street Cemetery. Donations in Greg's memory may be made to Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 381, East Longmeadow, MA 01028.
