1935 - 2019 Obituary Condolences
Helen K. Freitag Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family of Helen Koback Freitag announces her peaceful passing on March 20, 2019, in Hartford. Helen was the beloved wife of Frederick W. Freitag who predeceased her in 1991. Helen was born in Hartford on July 19, 1935 and grew up in the "Behind the Rocks" neighborhood, the only daughter of Nicholas I. Koback and Anna Demick Koback. She graduated from Hartford High School and shortly afterward she married the boy next door. She became a Navy wife, caring for their three daughters and keeping the home fires burning while he was away at sea – sometimes for months at a time. After Fred retired from the Navy they settled in Newington where she lived for the rest of her life. She worked briefly at The Aetna right out of high school and at The Travelers and as a lunch lady in the Newington School system when her children were older; but her great joy and her purpose in life was her family. In recent years she enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Newington Senior Center. She was a member of the Hartford Liederkranz, Newington Garden Club, Newington Historical Society, and a former member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her loved and loving daughters - Esther Derr and her husband, Richard, of West Simsbury, Nancy Freitag of Falls Church, VA and Linda Porter of Southington. Her four adored grandchildren, Nicholas Derr and his wife, Charlotte, of Buffalo, NY, Parker Porter and his fiancée, Kara Silva, of New Britain, Alexis Derr Granger and her husband, Kevin, of Simsbury and Joshua Porter of Southington. She also leaves her beloved great-grandchildren Penelope, Georgia & Roman and Andrew & Blake. Helen was joyously anticipating the arrival of her sixth great-grandchild in July. In addition, she leaves her two remaining brothers-in-law John W. Freitag and Herman W. Freitag, along with a host of nieces and nephews who adored "Auntie Helen". Along with her husband, Fred, she was predeceased by her twin brother Nicholas N. Koback and her special friend of her later years, Lionel St. Martin. Calling hours will be Sunday, March 24th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Duksa Famiy Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, CT. Burial will be private in West Meadow Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the at www.lung.org. To share a memory with her family, please visit us at www.duksa.net.
