Janet M. Adcock Obituary
Janet Mae Adcock (Jan) of Glastonbury CT age 90 died very peacefully at home on January 4, 2019. She was born and raised in Hartford, daughter of Mabel (Erickson) and Ralph G Adcock.Jan graduated from New Britain Teachers College & taught elementary school in Glastonbury (High Street School and Hebron Avenue School) and in Manchester. She then returned to college, earning a degree in library science and working in that capacity for the East Hartford School system and The American School for the Deaf. She had a love of travel, vacationing in Mexico & Central America, exploring Mayan ruins, early architecture & local cultures. She traveled to Europe, enjoying walking tours & often visiting sites related to famous authors. In her retirement, she especially enjoyed road trips to the coast of Maine with her dear friend & neighbor Barbara Landon.Jan also spent 10 years living and working in England's Troutbeck district very near the home of Beatrix Potter whose work she greatly loved.Upon returning to CT, Jan teamed up with her lifelong friend Beatrice Coward to build a charming farmhouse on 40 rural acres in Stafford, utilizing her extensive carpentry skills and employing only hand tools. While never actually residing on the property, Jan declared this a "wonderful experience."Jan had many and varied interests. An avid reader, she accumulated an extensive book collection, with a focus on child literature. She loved jigsaw puzzles. She developed calligraphy skills and created greeting cards for every holiday to send to friends. Her intellectual curiosity knew no bounds and she would resort to her Oxford English Dictionary or her encyclopedia set whenever she came across an unknown word. Cribbage on the deck with neighbor Barbara was a daily occurrence.Jan felt very strongly about helping those in need & those less fortunate. She donated to many organizations including The Sierra Club, Oxfam, UNICEF, Save The Children and Heifer Int. She was a lifelong member of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), PETA, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Nature Conservatory.Jan was grateful for her numerous friends at Meadow Hill, where she resided for the last two decades of her life. She also leaves behind cousin Edla Fortin of Warwick RI ,and longtime friends, Joan Kemble of Madison, Wisconsin , Kay Nelson of Hendersonville, NC and Barbara LeGrande of Hartford CT, her "Book Barbara".In accordance with Jan's wishes, there will be no service.
