Janina Zdanys Obituary
Janina Zdanys died peacefully on October 9, 2018, cared for by her children and grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and whose lives she celebrated each day with joy. She was born on December 9, 1927, in Kaunas, Lithuania, daughter of the late Arturas and Viktorija (Zuperkaite) Dreslius. During the Second World War, she and her family escaped the Russian occupation of Lithuania and lived for nearly five years in a refugee camp in Seligenstadt, Germany, under the sponsorship of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. It was there that she met her husband Alfonsas, to whom she was married for seventy years. They came to the United States in August 1949, settling first in Vermont as part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture refugee resettlement program, and in 1950 moved to New Britain, where she raised her children and worked in local manufacturing. In 1969, she and Alfonsas bought the Maple Motel in Newington, which they owned and operated until retiring in 1985. Those years were a special fulfillment of the interests she had as a young girl in the challenges and rewards of running her own business. Janina was predeceased by her husband, by her parents, and by her brothers Pranas, Povilas, and Stasys. She leaves her children Ramute Mills of Brecksville, OH, and Gintaras Karosas; Jonas and Jean Zdanys of Wallingford; Leonas and Mary Ellen Zdanys of Woodstock; and Algirdas Zdanys of Newington. She also leaves six grandchildren, for whom she will always be their beloved Grammy and their favorite cook: William and Renee Mills of Chagrin Falls, OH; David Mills and Molly Jones of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Kristina Zdanys and Algis Kalvaitis of West Hartford; Joanna Zdanys and Jason Lee of Brooklyn, NY; Lee and Jennifer Zdanys of Woodstock; and Jessica Zdanys of Waterford. And, she leaves seven great-grandchildren: Alexa, Kate, and Anna Mills of Chagrin Falls; Laura and Julia Kalvaitis of West Hartford; and Nora and Ben Zdanys of Woodstock. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Brone Kirkutis Zdanys of Wethersfield, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial are private. Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington is serving her family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in the name of Janina Zdanys be made to the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 600 Liberty Highway, Putnam, CT 06260-2503.
