HURLOCK, Matthew J.

After fighting a yearlong battle with cancer, Matthew J. Hurlock passed away at home, in Coventry, with family at his side on July 6, 2011. He was born on April 21, 1972 in Rockville; he was the son of Huber and Cynthia (Leveille) Hurlock of Coventry and grew up in Mansfield graduating from E. O. Smith High School in 1990. He was motivated to excel in the Physical Education program at Springfield College where he graduated in 1994. That fall he started teaching elementary physical education in Coventry and has continued there in the school system until the fall of 2010. During his teaching he found time to get a Masters Degree in Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. His family and coaching boy's basketball and girl's volleyball at Coventry High School were his passions. He helped develop and run summer programs for younger children to develop skills in ball handling and teamwork to get confidant and motivated players entering high school. Though winning was better than losing his goals were to develop player self esteem, teamwork, and work ethic. He coached basketball from 1997 thru 2009 with four conference championships and three conference tournament championships along the way. He started the volleyball program in 2001 and won small school State Championships seven of the last eight years including last year during cancer treatments. He was awarded High School Coach of the Year for Girls Volleyball in 2008 by the CT Sports Writers Alliance and was named Girl's Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2010 by the CT High School Coaches Association. He is survived by his wife, Julie, son Colby (4) and daughter Katelyn (3) and their memories of family time at home, at the shore, at local play areas and town Saturday kids programs and a recent trip to Disney World. He is also survived by his twin brother Michael Hurlock of Mansfield; and sister and brother in-law Stacey and Michael Carl and their 2 children Lindsey (4) and Jacob (2) of Coventry. The family wishes to thank all friends, neighbors, and the community for their thoughts, prayers, and kindness during this past year.
Relatives and friends are welcomed on Sunday, July 10, 2011 for "A Celebration of Life" at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road (Rt 195), Tolland, CT 06084 from 2-6 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date. My condolences to Matt's family - he was an incredible mentor and friend, playing volleyball with him and John Roberts on the courts at UConn were some of the best days. I'm so sorry for your (and everyone's) loss. Truly a great guy, and he touched a lot of lives.

Wow, Mr. Hurlock had been my P.E. teacher on and off from 3rd grade to 7th grade. I remember when his wife had just had Colby and how ecsited he was. I was never the athletic type of child but Mr. Hurlock was always supporting me in gym class. My deepest sympathies to his wife and his children. You will forever be in my prayers

Whenever I saw Coventry HS on my schedule, I was a very happy Referee. I respected Matt. and he was a true gentleman, advocate for his players, and good sport. I will miss him on the sidelines of the great sport that we shared. My sincere condolences to his family, his teams and those that loved him. He will be sorely missed.

Coach Hurlock and his Husky HP Volleyball team 2010
Coach Hurlock taught my daughter that it's not only ok to make mistakes but that it's a critical part of learning to excel at the sport they both love, volleyball. He was the kind of coach who didn't give out meaningless praise but when he complimented his players, they felt they had earned it. He was the kind of coach who comes into an athlete's life once in a great while who taught skills (athletic, teamwork, self esteem, the value of hardwork and dedication, and so much more) skills that will last a lifetime. He leaves a legacy of accomplishment that few can match and is sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with your family.

Coach Hurlock touched so many people. My sons were blessed by his influence, though their time spent together was brief. May he rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in his legacy, which will carry on through all of the students and parents who had the opportunity to know this great man.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this sad loss. Mr. Hurlock was a wonderful example to children to follow your dreams, like he did. R.I.P. Matt. Your legacy will live in your children, and in all the Coventry kids you taught and played their hearts out for you. You are bigger than life, and you will never, ever be forgotten. You changed our lives for the better and made this world a better place. We will miss you. What he has done for Coventry sports and more importantly the development of so many strong young women will be his legacy.

Julie and family, we are so sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort in all the words from those who loved and respected Matt so much. He made a huge impact on the lives of so many young people and their parents in his short time with us. It is a priviledge and honor to have known him. You and your family will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

I first 'met' Matt in 1998, at the Coventry High School academic awards ceremony, where, on very short notice, he 'stepped-up' and gave an inspiring address, speaking of his twin brother. People listened. Trust me. People listened.

I am truly thankful that he and Julie chose to make their home in our neighborhood.

My thoughts and prayers are with Matt's family and friends. I will miss Matt on the sidelines but I will carry many memories of Sat. morning scrimmages his interaction with his players and many laughs. What he instilled in many former players and students will live on.
