Patricia McCAMMON Obituary

McCAMMON, Patricia J.

Patricia J. McCammon lost her nearly two year struggle with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease on Tuesday (December 25, 2012). Although this horrific disease stripped her of her physical abilities, it did not diminish her spirit or determination. Pat leaves behind her husband of 41 years, Richard. They have two children, Brandt McCammon, living in Baltimore, MD and Jessica Brunelle (Matt) of East Granby. Matt and Jessica gave Pat two wonderful grandsons to spoil, Dilan- age 8 and Brock-age 3. Pat is also survived by two siblings, Jean Milner living in Terre Haute, IN and David Shrum of Sullivan, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Janet Shrum of Sullivan, IN. Pat and Richard grew up in Sullivan County Indiana. After graduating from college in 1971, they moved to Indianapolis, IN which they made their home for 41 years. Pat taught special education for 10 years in the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) until the arrival of her children. Pat and Rich moved to Simsbury, at the time of her diagnosis to be closer to family. Pat's first passion was being a loving wife and mom and then a "Grammy". Brandt, Jessica, and the Brunelle boys brought many wonderful adventures, challenges, and experiences that Pat relished. In addition to her commitment to her family, Pat loved her home and excelled at holiday decorating, entertaining, and creating a sense of home for her family. She also enjoyed cooking, and she used her passion to bring together her family for nightly home-cooked meals. Among her other passions were travel (her favorite was Italy), golf, skiing, attending Indiana University basketball games, Friday night dates (dinner and a movie), caring for her Samoyeds (Sam and Basil), card nights with the Murphy's, and get togethers with the Bailey's. She loved attending Geist Christian Church, where she and her family were members. Pat loved the thoughtful words of our minister, Randy Spleth. Thanks go out to the Men's and Women's Prayer Groups for their support during this ordeal. Pat was a loyal friend and consciously worked at maintaining friendships. Counted among them are her IPS school 110 fellow teachers (the parties on the porch), the Book Club (even if she didn't always read the book), and the girls and couples bridge nights (the many dinners and fellowship). She also maintained relationships with high school friends. She was a class officer at Sullivan High School and stayed active in helping with class reunions. Pat also loved college reunions at Rich's alma mater, Rose Hulman. She loved being with the "Cruise Brothers" and their spouses.
Funeral service will be held at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, TODAY, Thursday, December 27 at 11 a.m.. Friends may call prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Simsbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an ALS research fund. Not sure what to say?

I am saddened to learn of Pat's passing. Although I did not know her very well, I was able to sense how warm and caring a person she was from the Christmas notes that I was fortunate enough to have received in recent years. Bless you all in dealing with your loss.

Rich, Jess and Brandt,
We are so saddened by Pat's passing. She was a blessing to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. I credit her with
inspiring me to become a decent cook and hostess. She always made entertaining seem effortless and was most gracious in sharing her recipes with others. Her beef tenderloin recipe is one I make often and remember her first serving it to us. Spinach stuffed mushrooms is another favorite as are all the recipes in the Junior League cookbook she helped create. We send our deepest sympathy to you all. We know she is missed.
