Paul M. Hughes Obituary

Paul M. Hughes, 72, of Bloomfield, husband for 50 years to Diana (Parks) Hughes, passed away Friday, July 18, 2014, as the result of an accident in Bloomfield. Born in Norwalk, son of the late Arthur Middleton Reeves Hughes and Sarah (Jay) Hughes, he was raised in Rochester, NY. His professional career was in commercial lending, first with the former First National City Bank and the New Britain Bank & Trust before joining the Connecticut Department of Ecomonic Development. As commercial lender for the Development Authority, he helped business to grow and expand in Connecticut. After retiring, Paul turned his focus and enthusiasm towards a variety of projects. He founded a non-profit that encouraged urban teens to consider entrepreneurship as a career goal. Recently, Paul worked for the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce where he passionately served as a Small Business Specialist, as an Administrator for the Middlesex County Revitalization Commission and, over the last 17 years, as a counseling resource and guest speaker for the Side Street to Main Street Minority Business Development and Leadership Program. Paul pursued his zeal for the outdoors with his maple syrup production business, Hughes Maple Syrup. He was an influential member of the Connecticut cycling community, organizing fund raising rides and area events. Besides his wife Diana, he leaves a son, Dudley J. Hughes and his wife Laura Burtness of Moss Beach, CA; a daughter, Laura Cattabriga and her husband Alberto of North Bay Village, FL; two grandchildren, Daniele and Alessandro Cattabriga; a brother, Arthur M. Hughes of Ft Lauderdale, FL; and two sisters, Sarah Carr of Madison and Emily Page of Arlington, MA. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 11 AM at Old Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, 59 Tariffville Road, Bloomfield. Burial will be private in Old Saint Andrew's Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Paul's memory to the Wintonbury Land Trust or Old Saint Andrew's Church. The Carmon Windsor Funeral Home is caring for the arrangements.
