Robert McBrair Obituary

Robert J. McBrair, 82, of Marlborough, CT, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT. Robert was born on April 29, 1938 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He graduated in 1956 from Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, NJ and Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 1960. He resided in Marlborough, CT for 48 years. Robert was diagnosed with MS in 1972. He retired from Exxon Corp. after 15 years of various marketing, management and staff positions. Robert never let his disability get in the way of his goals and dreams and his optimism always prevailed. He tackled challenges and obstacles with humor and faith. His selfless life's mission was to make the world a better place. Robert left his fingerprint on many local charitable, civic, and educational organizations including AHM, AFS, FISH, RTC, Marlborough Zoning Commission, Richmond Memorial Library Assoc. Congregational Church of Marlborough, Wesleyan University Alumni Association, Rotary International, American Petroleum Council and he was a U.S. Jaycee National Director. He was cited by the Connecticut State General Assembly for his contributions in and around Marlborough, and later by Wesleyan and the Secretary of the State and Governor of CT for his commitment to service. Rob is remembered by all who knew him for his integrity, strong moral compass, dedication to service, his unwavering love for his family and his contagious smile and laugh! Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Judith L., daughter Jennifer L. and her husband Benjamin J. Mast of Stow, MA and grandchildren Seviya Jordan Mast and Tucker Hutchins Mast, brothers Peter S. and David C. and their wives Wendy and Joy McBrair, a step brother Jack Ruth, his brother-in-law, Jerry London and their families, his dear step sister, Annie H. Kipp, who predeceased him. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date. Rob was the husband of my favorite teaching in elementary school and we went to the same church. I kept trying to convince him to let me drive his wheelchair when I was young because I thought it looked like SO MUCH FUN! He would always say the same thing every time I tried a new reason why he should let me try driving it. I had to wait until I was 16 and had a drivers license to run it. I of course thought that was such a long time to have to wait!

Finally, I was over 16 and had my drivers license. My family was in church and I saw Rob after the service and went over to say hi. I mentioned that I was finally old enough and had a drivers license, but of course by that time I was having much more fun driving my parents' car. We had a good laugh about it and Rob said if I ever changed my mind and wanted to go for a slow jaunt he would let me.

I think back on all of my interactions with him with fondness. The world has lost a wonderful man. My sympathies and heart goes out to Mrs. McBrair (always what I knew her as when I was young) and their kids and grandkids.

I was so saddened to hear about Rob's passing. He was such a genuinely pleasant person that I think everyone he met immediately liked him. Over all the years I knew him I don't ever remember him being down. It was always my expectation that even with his medical issues he'd outlive us all! He will be missed.

We always will remember Rob as a good and wise friend, who with his wife, Judi, anchored our neighborhood and gave so much to the community for so many years. Rob had a special talent for working with people to get things done. When one needed advice, Rob was the person to seek out: he could be counted on to carefully listen and offer the very best consul. The extent to which Rob volunteered his time, talents, and support for the betterment of several non-profits is a legacy from which all who knew him can learn and benefit. The grace with which he accomplished so much for others marks Rob as an exemplar of “our better angels.”

To Judy and family, my sincere condolences. I am very sad to hear of Robert’s passing. He was one of my favorite patients. He always had a smile when he came to our office and a wonderful sense of humor despite having to deal with a tough disease. I remember him fondly and how enjoyable a person he was. The world should have more people like him.
