Robert Spellman Obituary
Father Robert G.W. Spellman Child of God, Robert G. W. Spellman, 96, of Bloomfield, CT passed away on July 20, 2018. Born in Cleveland OH in Sept 1921, to the late Frank A. and Marie (Spellman) Mangold; later adopted as son by his maternal grandparents, the late George W and Grace W Spellman. His educational pursuits were many and varied, primarily Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL; Case Western Reserve University, Master of Arts in French, and Emmanuel College, Univ. of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon, Canada, graduating there with degrees of Licentiate in Theology and Bachelor of Arts. He was ordained to the priesthood of the Church of England in 1950. Connecticut became his home of choice and he served as vicar in Pittsfield, MA and Baltimore, MD and three other small parishes until 1960 where he served at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, New Haven, CT, for over 25 years. His duties there were many: curate, teacher of Biblical studies to youth in the church school, church organist, director of youth activities and more. He would say this was his happiest and most productive tenure of all. He retired in 1986 , when he moved to Wethersfield, CT. where he served at Trinity Church, Hartford, CT. until 2005. He moved to Seabury , a church supported retirement community in Bloomfield, CT and recently, 2018, to Manchester VT. He dearly loved family, traveling in U.S. and widely abroad, photography, music, and genealogy to the nth degree. Robert's life was a testimony to his Lord and Savior , Jesus Christ. He dedicated his life at an early age to proclaiming the gospel of Christ (John 3:16) and many were influenced and lives changed by accepting Christ into their hearts as Lord and Savior. He had many loved passages from the Bible including "He that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst….All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" This Robert loved to proclaim, his ardent wish being that it characterize his life. His life exemplified love and caring for others, kindness, humbleness, joy and peace, and a great sense of humor. Truly, he was God's faithful and true servant. Soli Gloria! He is survived by his beloved cousin, Juanita (Richard Schubert), of Walnut Creek, OH, 44687; and, Marvin Gates and Jerry Smith of Danby, VT. and a host of friends from his long and dedicated ministries. Private burial services were held in Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Heights, OH, on Aug 2, 2018, ; Rev. Dr. Jon Fancher officiating. Those who wish may contact Juanita Schubert, P.O. 209, Walnut Creek, OH, 44687.
