Sue Scanlon Obituary

August 13, 1931 - October 1, 2018 Sue passed away peacefully in the company of her husband of 63 years Deacon Thomas P. Scanlon and after two weeks of loving goodbyes and visits from friends and family at the Jerome Home in New Britain, CT. She was born during the Great Depression, the second daughter in a close-knit family of five. Born in Reading, PA the family relocated four times following her father's employment. They lived in Eau Claire and Sparta, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, PA and ended up in Crestwood, NY. Because of these early experiences she developed a strong sense of family, valued her friendships, her Catholic faith and developed her positive attitude in hard times. "Count your Blessings" was her mantra throughout her life. And as the elder sister of three younger mischievous siblings, she developed a nurturing, loving spirit. Sue graduated from Roosevelt High in Yonkers, NY in 1948 having studied pre-nursing and was accepted at several schools, but events of the times disallowed that dream and so she went to work NYC as a secretary, model, and expert "Wrapper". Five years later, on a blind date she met Tom Scanlon, the love of her life. They married in 1955. It was as a wife and mother of five children and aunt to more than a dozen nieces and nephews that she realized her calling was that of nurturer. She and Tom teamed up to see Tom graduate from Manhattan College in 1959. Sue worked, typed papers, helped Tom study and delivered two children before graduation. They moved to Granby, CT in 1961 to open the Arthur Anderson Office in Hartford, CT with a third child in tow and soon two more children arrived. Sue was very active in all the PTA activities in her children's schools and her neighborhood "The Glen" association and in the Ladies Guilds of St. Therese Parish in Granby and later at St. Bernard's in Tariffville. Her abiding faith was emblazoned in her spirit! Through her words and actions she followed Jesus. She constantly wondered at the demonstration of God's love for us in the flowers in her garden, the birds and bears at her feeder, the sunrises and sunsets on Cape Cod and the smile of a baby. She exclaimed often "How could anyone not believe in God? Just look!" She humbly pursued acts of kindness, offering friendship and kind words and deeds to everyone. She gave rides to the elderly, made prayer shawls, cooked and hosted dinners for friends, and babysat for friends' and families' children when needed. She provided constant support to her husband Tom in his calling as a Catholic deacon at St. Mary's and St. Bernard's in Simbury, CT. Her most profound testimony to her faith was the example she set in the tragic loss of her young daughter Suzy and later her son Tom. She shared her coping philosophy with anyone asking for her advice. Her belief "I firmly believe in the promise of an eternal life where we will all be together again. We have to continue living for the rest of our family and do the best we can do on earth." She received great comfort from her devotion to Mary the Mother of Jesus. Even after several strokes she held each bead of the rosary despite not being able to speak. Sue believed you use your God given talents for a purpose. She especially encouraged her daughters and granddaughters to pursue their educations and careers. That they be independent minded and marry for love, because they wanted to not because they needed to. Likewise she wanted her sons and grandsons to enter into marriage partnerships and to respect their wives. She went back to work after 28 years to help with college tuitions at CIGNA. And oh how she loved and advocated for her husband Tom, partners to the end. As their medical needs mandated, they moved from their much loved home of 52 years in Granby. She bravely made the move first to Cheshire Hillside Village and 2 years later to Mulberry Gardens, where she was tickled to be crowned Miss Mulberry Gardens' 2016 (she was never one to focus on physical beauty). But the biggest challenge was to downsize to one bedroom at Jerome Home in New Britain, CT. Sue resolved to focus on what they could do to brighten the lives of other residents and to help the staff. Again she focused on the blessing of still being with Tom. They often went to sleep holding hands between the two beds pushed together as close as allowed. Sue leaves her husband, Thomas P. Scanlon; her daughters, Katherine Rawden and her husband Lou of Darien, CT and Jeanne Anderson and her husband John of Cheshire, CT; her son, Christopher Scanlon and his wife Glynnis of Milford, CT; and seven grandchildren, Thomas A. Scanlon, Katie Suzie and Louie Rawden, Zoe and Jack Anderson, and Sara and Matthew Scanlon; her brothers, Stephen and Michael Palen; a brother-in-law, Robert Lindgren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Suzanne Bernice; a son, Thomas Vernon; her mother and father, Vernon and Bernice (Roy) Palen; her sisters, Patricia Waddill and Mary Lindgren; a brother-in-law, George Waddill; a sister-in-law, Jean Palen; and a nephew, Bobby Lindgren. Her family will receive friends on Friday, October 12, 3-7 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Saturday, October 13, 10 a.m., at St. Therese Church, 120 West Granby Rd., Granby. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery, Tariffville. Dearest Tom & family,
I was so sad to read the news of Sue's passing. She was a lovely person and beautiful on the inside and out. I was so happy to meet you and your family as Mulberry neighbors to my mother Mary DiVenere. You were always so kind and loving to her and we appreciated your caring ways. May God be with you all at this difficult time. We will remember you all in prayer. God bless.
Sincerely,
