Travis HEDRICK Obituary

On Tuesday, (August 7), Travis Hedrick of Middletown died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends. He was 77 years old; the cause of death was Alzheimer's disease. He was born to the late Travis Hedrick, Sr. and Ruth Lord Hedrick on December 14, 1934, in Chattanooga, TN. After graduating from Stetson University in 1957 he served two years in the United States Seventh Infantry in Germany, where he made lifelong friends. For three years he worked for the State of Florida, first as a social worker and then as a Counselor for the State Vocational Rehabilitation Service. After earning his Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University, he went on to pursue a Master's of Public Health from Yale University, specializing in health administration. In the course of his long career teaching at Quinnipiac University, Travis served as Chairman of the Department of Health Administration and was an active member of the Quinnipiac Faculty Federation and the Connecticut State Federation of Teachers. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2002. In 2011 he received the Bulldog Award from Yale University in recognition for his service to the School of Public Health. His passion for learning touched countless students whom he mentored and supported throughout their careers. Travis was an active member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, where he sang in the choir, served on the vestry, and contributed to the church's social justice mission in Middletown and the world. He was an outspoken and eloquent advocate for the unrepresented and the oppressed, a fierce and loyal friend, and a devoted and loving husband and father. He will be missed by the supper club he started 28 years ago, a weekly gathering of friends that has turned into a tradition that will go on without him, informed by his lively spirit, raunchy humor, and abiding love. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan Doran Hedrick; daughters Jessica Hedrick (New York, NY) and Rachel Hedrick (Austin, TX); sister, Phyllis Harris (Naples, FL); and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 11 at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 381 Main Street, Middletown. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Resource Center, 1261 S. Main St., Plantsville, CT 06479. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.doolittlefuneralservice.com. Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown is in charge of arrangements.
