William Ferdinand Grunewald Obituary
William Ferdinand Grunewald, life-long resident of Avon and loved by all who knew him, has passed away at his beloved home at the age of 93. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life for 67 years. He is survived by their two children, Douglas Grunewald and his wife Leslie of Livermore, California and Marcia Jones and her fiancé, Robert Diorio of New Hartford, his seven beloved grandchildren, Heather Gombos, Kristen Tangarone, Leise Smyrl, Robyn Ewig, Allison Jones, Gregory Jones and David Jones, and their spouses Christian, Jeremy, Stephanie, Kenneth and Deborah, and his beloved great-grandchildren, Corrin, Kathleen, Mary, Elise, Adam, Alex, Kellam, Genevieve and Margaret, as well as his adopted great-granddaughter, Emma. Bill was born at Hartford Hospital on February 25th, 1925. He resided on Lovely Street his entire life and was a pillar of the Avon community for all of his adult life. He met Gini on the school bus and it was truly love at first sight for them both. He began his career as a surveyor while still in high school, apprenticing to Merton Hodge Surveying at the age of 15. Merton held his job for him when he joined the Merchant Marines at the onset of World War II, where he served in the Pacific on the freighter USS Alamo Victory. When Bill and Gini married in 1946, Bill continued to work for Merton Hodge, who became his friend and mentor. He was especially valued by Merton for his business skills and his special connection with people and Bill acquired his surveyor's license under Merton's tutelage. Upon his death, Merton left his business to Bill and two partners, who restructured the business to become Hodge Surveying Associates, a well-known and well-respected business dedicated to superior knowledge, quality work, and community service. The business further expanded to include Hodge Engineering Associates, Inc. with the addition of the engineering firm of Buck and Buck. Bill was active in town politics and had many friends and associates through that venue. He was on the building committee of Avon High School and the Avon Senior Center, a life-time member of the Golf Club of Avon where he and Gini both pursued their insatiable love of golf, and a parishioner of St. Matthew Lutheran Church from which he drew love, support and faith. Bill was known as a dependable community member and valued friend. All who knew him loved him for his honesty, integrity, patience and humor. Bill saw the best in every person and every situation, and was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. The family would like to thank Peg Murphy and her husband, Bob, for their unending friendship, love and support, and all of Bill's close friends whose friendships were so valued and treasured. Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville on Monday (June 11) from 4:00-7:00pm. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday (June 12) at 10:00am in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 224 Lovely St., Avon followed by burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Avon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Avon Health Center, 652 West Avon Rd., Avon, CT 06001, whose nurses and aides took such good care of Gini in her last years and meant the world to Bill.
