Barbara D. Todd Obituary

WEST HARTFORD - Barbara Duncan Todd, 77, of West Hartford, CT, formerly of Manchester, CT, passed away the morning of January 22, 2018 at the St. Mary Home in West Hartford. Barbara was born in Manchester on April 27, 1940, and lived most of her life in Manchester, up to the time she moved to West Hartford to be closer to her family in 2013. The only child of George and Anna Gertrude (Gordon) Duncan of Manchester, she spent her younger years in an historic home on South Main Street, which she loved and spoke of frequently. Barbara and her parents later moved across town to Manchester's west side in the early 1960's. She was a proud self-historian of Manchester, learning the history of the town's past through stories passed down to her by her mother and father, both of whom she loved and cared for in their elderly years. In her twenties, Barbara met Gordon Todd, whose family had moved directly next door. In later years, she would recall how she would look out her window and remark to herself, "I'm going to marry that boy." She did just that on November 20, 1965, and she and Gordon were married for over 52 years. Together, they raised their family in the same neighborhood in which their parents lived. Barbara was a 1958 graduate of Manchester High School, and later earned her BA from Central Connecticut State University, and Master's from the University of Connecticut. She used her Master's in education to teach third grade, before starting a family. Barbara and Gordon were both only children, but went on to have two sons of their own - Christopher, born in 1968, and Mark, born in 1970. Early on, the family enjoyed trips to Cape Cod and camping. Through the years, Barbara enjoyed shopping, listening to music, talking, comforting friends on the phone, and taking scenic drives. She was instrumental in organizing a liver disease support group at the University of Connecticut Health Center, where she put her organizational skills to work, as well as her gift for conversation. Many benefited from the work she did during that time. Barbara was a proud Irish woman and would often tell stories of her relatives from County Armagh, Ireland. She kept written journals, and also documented hours of both Ireland and Manchester family history through recorded interviews with her mother. Barbara made many friends throughout the years from different walks of life. She loved her family, and was a great mother, as well as grandmother to her four granddaughters. We will all miss her so much. No one but her could get laughing in such a fashion that often led to her famous uncontrollable "cackling." We will always fondly remember her in that way. She is survived by her husband Gordon, and her two sons, Christopher Todd and fiancé Jeanne Starski of Manchester, and Mark Todd and wife Linda of West Hartford. She is also survived by her granddaughters Katie, Meghan, and Molly Todd of Duanesburg, NY, and Margaret Todd of West Hartford, her former daughter-in-law, Amiee Duncan Todd of Duanesburg, NY, and many lucky friends - some life-long. May the road rise to meet you and may the wind be always at your back¿. Calling hours will be held from 9:30-11:00am on Thursday, January 25, at the Holmes - Watkins Funeral Home at 400 Main St Manchester, CT, followed by a brief service. Burial will be immediately following at East Cemetery in Manchester. Donations to the Alzheimer's CT chapter and Liver Foundation are welcome to be made in her memory.
