LOGEMANN, Dr. George W.

Dr. George W. Logemann of West Hartford, CT, formerly of Simsbury, an entrepreneur, accomplished scholar, and professor of mathematics and computer science, died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, on Tuesday (June 5, 2012). Dr. Logemann was born on January 31, 1938 in Milwaukee, WI to the late Hugo Logemann Sr. and Elizabeth Barbara Wahl. Dr. Logemann received his early musical education in Whitefish Bay, WI, and graduated high school as valedictorian of his class. He graduated with academic honors from California Institute of Technology with a B.S in mathematics and computers, and went on to receive his PhD from the Courant Institute of New York University in applied mathematics. As a professor at NYU, Dr. Logemann was celebrated and recognized for his work in formulating the Davis-Putnam-Logemann-Loveland (DPLL) algorithm. He also established several information technology companies worldwide where he pioneered medical applications of computer technology in the pharmaceutical industry. An accomplished musician, Dr. Logemann was a professional cellist as well as an innovator in the field of computer music; he performed his compositions in venues throughout the country. Passionate about art in all its forms, he was a well-loved patron of the theater, symphony, ballet and opera. Beloved partner to Bernice C. Schaefer of West Hartford, he was a cherished member of her family. A devoted father figure to her children, and a grandfather, "Uncle George", to her grandchildren, he never missed a squash match, soccer game, or performance. He is also survived by Janet Schaefer and Michael Miller and their children Emily and Zoe; and Ruth Schaefer and Virgil Guzulescu and their daughter Meg, and treasured dog Tommy, who will miss their daily walks.
