Roby Lee Stegall

Hattiesburg, MS

Roby Lee Stegall, of Hattiesburg, MS, died at home on April 27, 2013 after a long illness. He was 87 years old. Mr. Stegall was born in Pelehatchie, MS, Feb. 4, 1926. His family later moved to Forest, MS where he attended Forest Public Schools. He graduated high school in 1943 from Co-Lin Jr. College. In 1944, he enlisted in US Navy and served in the South Pacific during WW II for 21 months when he was honorably discharged. After his military service, he enrolled at the University of Mississippi and then in School of Law, where he served as secretary of his law class. He received his Juris Doctor in 1951. At that time, he and his wife, Ellen Fitts Stegall, moved to Forest, MS where he set up his law practice and was owner of Stegall Furniture Company. While in Forest, Mr. Stegall was member of the Rotary Club, where he served as president; Ole Miss Alumni Association and member of Forest United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and was a Sunday School teacher. In 1978, he and his wife retired to San Diego, California. Two years ago, they moved back to Mississippi to be close to family.

Mr. Stegall is preceded in death by his parents, C. P. and Emma Lee Stegall; 2 sisters, Deloris Riser and Lucy Allums; his grandson Rob Warren; and son-in-law, Jimmy Warren.

Mr. Stegall is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ellen Fitts Stegall, of Hattiesburg, MS; 2 daughters, Susan Warren of Holly Springs, MS and Stacey (Bill) Pace of Hattiesburg, MS; a son, Roby Lee Stegall, Jr. of Hattiesburg, MS formally of San Diego, Ca; 3 grandchildren, Lewis (Vicki) Pace, Alexis (Clay) Williams and Courtney (Rory) Hintz, all of Ocean Springs, MS; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stegall wished for his body to be donated to University Medical Center and a memorial service will be held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Friday, May 3, 2013, at 2:00 with visitation before the service.
