CLARY, Reed Robinson, Jr., 87, of Miami, FL, went home to be with the Lord on December 5, 2012. He was born in Richmond, VA on December 29, 1924, the son of Reed R. Clary and Virginia Whipple Myers. He spent his early years learning how to fly in Richmond, VA and joined the Royal Air Force, instructing British Cadet pilots at Riddle Field in Clewiston, FL during World War II. After the war he was hired by various airlines in Central and South America. He first flew with TACA Airlines and later TAN Airlines and lived in Central America following the war. He was later employed by Peruvian Airlines (APSA) and finished his aviation career traveling worldwide at Trans International Airlines, retiring in 1984. He was the patriarch of his family and taught his entire immediate family how to fly. His two sons and one grandson are currently airline captains. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he has lived in Miami since 1953 and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen Society. Reed will always be remembered for devotion to his family and care and compassion for his friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Julia Gilreath Clary; children, Reed R. Clary, III (Debby), Caroline Johnson (George) and John Clary (Jeanie); 5 grandsons; and 2 great-granddaughters. He lived his life to the fullest and will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. Visitation will be held Sunday evening, December 9 from 5-7 PM at Stanfill F.H. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, December 10 at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, 14401 Old Cutler Road. Interment will follow at Miami Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Reed's family respectfully requests that contributions be made to his church, Old Cutler Presbyterian (see address above).

I had many trips with Capt. Clary over my 15 yrs. with TIA/TAA. I knew that picking up a cockpit crew in FLA would mean Reed probably would be on it. A true gentleman and wonderful Captain to his entire crew always. So nice to hear that his flying skills have passed on to his sons and grandson.

It was nearly impossible to improve on the joy of flying with TIA/Transamerica. Getting to do it with Reed Clary was one of the rare exceptions. My most sincere sympathy to Reeds wife and family. Jay White

Dear Clary Family---I am so sorry to hear of "Captain Reed's" passing. I was a junior First Officer at TIA and had many trips with him. He was a great pilot and a very patient instructor to the new-hires. I believe his ability to teach as well as fly the airplane allowed many of us First Officers to transition to Captain with no problem. I enjoyed seeing him at an Airshow in Miami in 1998. A fine husband, father, and man.
