Daniel Kavanaugh Obituary

KAVANAUGH, DANIEL A. born in Miami on December 29, 1933, peacefully passed away at his longtime Coconut Grove home on January 10, 2019. He was the son of Thomas Kavanaugh and Josephine LaForce Kavanaugh, and he was the brother of Kathleen Kavanaugh Armstrong, Thomas Kavanaugh, Patricia Kavanaugh Loffredo, John Kavanaugh, and Marianne Kavanaugh. He is survived by his lovely wife Brigitte Cretey Kavanaugh and their wonderful daughter Clemence Kavanaugh. Dan was a graduate of Miami Jackson High School, Harvard College, and Harvard Law School. For the fiftieth reunion of his college class, he furnished the following report to his classmates about his activities since graduation: "Following service in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958, I finished Law School in '61, worked in Washington during the Kennedy administration and then campaigned around the country for the Democratic nominee for President in the election of '64. After the election, I returned home to Miami and entered politics as a candidate for the State Legislature. It was a rich experience, but not successful. In law practice over the next thirty years, I represented a wide variety of clients, from the New York Stock Exchange listed corporation at one end of our society's measure of success to the criminal defendant at the other, while remaining active in civic affairs - and with frequent escapes by boat to Key West, the Bahamas, and islands in between. The boat gave way a few years ago to a house in Brittany, where my wife and our teenage daughter and I now spend our summers. And law practice gave way a few years ago to an enjoyable retirement. With all of its advances and reverses and alarums and excursions, life has been good" Dan recently served for five years as a member of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee. He was a member of the Ransom-Everglades School Board of Trustees at the time of the merger of the two schools, and he was a past president of the Harvard Club of Miami. Dan was a close family friend of Lisa, Scott, Tom, and Kate Shaw, and their Mother Sheila. He was a long time friend of Arthur Shlafrock Sheldon since their days as first graders at Allapattah Elementary School in 1939. He was a close friend of David and Kathryn Lotspeich Villano, the Reno Family, Pierre and Vivian Berthier, Glenn and Francesca Violich Terry, Thorn and Theresa Grafton, Frank and Marian Delvecchio, Pat and Annie Booker Hughes, David and Isabel Andrews, and Ed McAmis and Gerson Gonzalez, and many others.

We, the Webb Family are very sad to hear the news of Dan's passing. He was an important player in our family and he will be missed. My deepest sympathies. May the God of all comfort strengthen the entire family during this time of sorrow. Always remember that God keeps in his memory those whom we lose because they are precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15)

Just found out my father passed away in Miami and saw Dan Kavanaugh's obituary. Dan was my landlord several years ago on 13th street in Little Havana. He was a good man and I'm sorry to hear of his passing. He always talked and bragged about how proud he was of his daughter and he loved her very much. My thoughts and prayers to the entire Kavanaugh family.
