Obituary

MICHAEL RICHIE SHIKANY Born February 15, 1979 in Miami, Florida. Michael was destined to be a chef from the age of four. His inspiration was from his grandfather, "Bumpa's" meatballs. This ignited a passion for cooking and creating, culminating in an acclaimed twenty year career as a chef. Michael attended Westminster Christian School and Gulliver Preparatory, where he made lifelong friends. He was active in football and lacrosse. After graduation, Michael attended George Washington University, graduating with a BA in business. He followed his passion, earning a degree in Culinary Arts from the French Culinary Institute in New York City. He proceeded to work at the country's top restaurants in New York, Le Bernandin, Babo and Grammercy Tavern before returning to South Florida to manage Ortanique on the Mile and Sushi Samba. In 2014, Michael opened his namesake restaurant, Shikany, in Wynwood. As a pioneer in this up and coming district, Michael was praised for his vision and culinary skills. Michael's compassion for people extended throughout his career. His zest for life was contagious and he felt compelled to please everyone he met. He was most at peace in the kitchen. He was always available to share recipes or comfort family and friends with his famous lobster mac 'n cheese. As Michael joins his "Bumpa" in heaven, his loved ones' hearts and love go with him. May God hold him in his loving arms, keeping him safe and at peace until he is reunited with his family. Michael is survived by his loving parents, Walter and Terri Shikany, his brother, Walter Shikany III and his wife, Lauren as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Granada Presbyterian Church, located at 950 University Drive, Coral Gables, Florida 33134. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Women of Tomorrow, The Chapman Partnership and Miami Lighthouse for the Blind.
