Naples, Florida - Robert D. W. Landon, II of Naples, Florida, died February 14, 2021. To the end, he enjoyed an active trusts and estates law practice, time with his family, and cruising the waters of Southwest Florida and Downeast Maine with Margaret ("Peggy"), his beloved wife of 55 years, aboard Swell Rider.
Mr. Landon was born June 17, 1940, in Binghamton, New York, to Robert and Eve Landon. He was class salutatorian at Vestal Central H.S. He graduated Amherst College with honors in 1962. He graduated Harvard Law School in 1965, and married Peggy soon after. As a young lawyer, he practiced at Hancock Ryan Shove & Hust in Syracuse, New York, and later at Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett in Manhattan.
In 1973, he brought his family to Miami, Florida, where he was a partner in the law firms of Smathers & Thompson and Mershon Sawyer Johnston Dunwody & Cole.
In 1995, he joined other lawyers specializing in trusts and estates law to form the law firm of Dunwody White & Landon, with offices in Coral Gables, Naples, and Palm Beach. At the same time, he and Peggy moved their primary residence to Naples, where they made dear friends and valuable contributions to the community. Mr. Landon was active for many years with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, the Foundation Committee of the NCH Healthcare System, and the Harvard Club of Naples. He was a member of Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife Peggy; son, Robert D. W. Landon, III (Kristin Keith) of Miami; daughter, Anne L. Dannacher (Gregor) of Manhattan; and grandchildren, Kirby L. Johnson (Paul), Claire H. Landon, Charles L. Dannacher, and Caroline A. Dannacher.

I just learned of Bob´s death. My condolences to his wife and children. Bob was my first boss out of law school. Smathers & Thompson in Miami hired me when I graduated from UF Law in 1978, and I was assigned to Bob. He became my mentor and to this day (I´m still practicing), I credit Bob Landon as the attorney who taught me how to be a lawyer. I tried to model myself on him. He was a terrific lawyer, a lawyer´s lawyer, and I will never forget him or his kindness to me. - William Mallory Kent, Jacksonville, Florida

So very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I had known Bob since the 1970's. He was a brilliant trusts and estates attorney and I always enjoyed working with Bob on the affairs of our mutual clients. Bob had a great personality, a keen mind and was clearly a leader among trusts and estates attorneys. The picture of him with his suspenders is how I will always remember him. A huge loss to his friends, clients, fellow attorneys and the Naples community.
