FLEISHER, RUTH SHAFER Born March 21, 1922, Ruth S. Fleisher, Maj. USAF Reserve, Ret, of Homestead, FL, flew west on November 30, 2016, following a long illness. The daughter of Howard M. and Florence Compton Shafer of Rochester, NY, Ruth slipped away at home, surrounded by people who loved her. Ruth was a retired Air Traffic Controller, accomplished pilot and instructor, and a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II. In 2010, she travelled to Washington, DC, where she received the Congressional Gold Medal for her wartime WASP service. Predeceased by her husband Lt. Col Maurice "Bud" Fleisher, USAF Ret., in 1983. A member of The Ninety-Nines, she flew in the Powder Puff Derby and held offices in the local Gold-Coast Chapter. There will be a celebration of Ruth's life at 11:00am on Friday, December 9, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, 1955 N. Krome Ave, Homestead.
