It's been 3 years. I miss your smile and your constant teasing. You were the happiest man I've ever known. You were living your dream and loving it. I wish you were here to know your little great granddaughter. You could have told her all your stories - like the one about the alligator that bit off the tip of your finger. I see some of you in each of your grandchildren. I know you would be as proud of them as I am. We'll always miss you, but you left us with rich memories of you and the love you had for all of us. I know you're still watching over all of us. I can feel you. I love you, Dad!

We'd all love to hear how Carrol is doing.

Two years ago yesterday Augie left us for the Big Modelling Bench in the sky. His craftmanship is missed by many. I would read his magazine articals over and over and always be amazed at what he was able to produce.

You are still missed by many.

The only time I actually met Augie was at the Chicago Hobby Show (RCHTA) in 1998 while working a booth for my employer, Stevens International. Mike Bass introduced me to Augie late in the day on a Friday, and Augie showed me pictures of one of his forthcoming GSL entires while we talked. I remember being impressed by his genuine warmth and friendliness. First impressions are always lasting ones, and I'll always fondly remember Augie for the time he took with me to discuss model cars back in October of 1998.

My old friend Augie:

It's been nearly two years since your untimely passing. We miss your contributions to our wonderful hobby -- your passing is still acute today.

Keep the hobby bench warm for us, old friend.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Augie but like thousand's of others I was very impressed with his craftmanship and seeing his models always inspired myself to try to build better models. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Living here in south Florida I met Augie several times over the years, and would see him on my occasional trips to OBH in Miami. I was a member of one model club or another in those times, and I remember one time Augie personally driving up from Miami and visiting our small model meeting just to talk models and share his vast knowledge with us other builders. His enthusiasm for models and teaching others knew no bounds. He was one of the greatest ambassadors for the model hobby.

I only had a few moments to visit with Mr. Hiscano at the GSL in 1999. He impressed me as a very nice, genuine individual with an incredible talent for automotive miniatures. He will be missed.

I met Mr. Hiscano in 1964 in Southern California. He was the Revell-Pactra Senior Co-Champion, I was the 16 year old intermediate champion. I remember him being so humble. Wow! Is what I thought when I saw his roadster with the 3-ply rosewood/nickel silver/rosewood steering wheel etc. May he rest in peace. Barry McAuley

It's been a year and almost 3 months since my Dad passed on and I am still no closer to realizing that he is gone ( in the physical sense ). He was always there for me, my Mother, my Sister, my family and as a matter of fact...everyone. He was so good at the things he chose to do that people came to love him like family. He always listened with great interest to anyone who would stop to talk or share an idea. He was tall and quite gentle and a giant in his fields. His love of trains, race cars and modeling precision hand crafted cars was evidenced by his career and creations. He was my BEST FRIEND and BUDDY and I miss him every second of every minute of every day. But I learned a lot from him and he lives on through me and my family and indeed all those whose life he had touched. Thanks for being my DAD ( I hope you can read this up there between showing GOD how to lathe turn that cylinder and talking to all of the departed NASCAR drivers ). ALL MY LOVE....MIKE.

Augie Hiscano is my grandfather. He was a talented modeler and an amazing individual. As a kid, I remember him taking my siblings and I to Dairy Queen and then to the park every Wednesday afternoon. One day each summer, he would take me to work with him at Orange Blossom and let me pick one toy to take home. He was definitely a talker (I suppose that's where I get my tongue), but he never interrupted you. He had a way about him that made whoever he was talking to feel as if the entire world stopped just to listen to what you had to say. I remember him showing me how to model animals out of clay once, and I couldn't wrap my head around how a man with hands as big as his, was able to create such delicate and intricate things. He taught me the importance of laughter, hard work, and family. I was always his Puddin' Pie and until I can no longer afford an ice cream bar, I will eat a Dilly Bar in his name. I love and miss you, Grampa, and everyday I will try harder to be like you.

What is there to say? Augie Hiscano

is my grandfather. I remember being a kid and getting to go to work with him on some mornings. Climbing up into the cab of his red Ford Ranger and thinking he was the biggest man in the world. He always encouraged me to do what I love. He told me he wanted me to play guitar everyday for the rest of my life. So I could have the joy he had building model cars. He never got a chance to see me take the stage in my own right and play my guitar. But every time I take the stage now it's for him. He is my hero and my blood. All my life all I ever wanted to be was him.

You know, it has been nearly a year, and my anguish at Augie's passing is still sharp and acute. He was my friend, my mentor, and probably the greatest ambassador for the model car hobby. His cheerful and "gentlemanly" habits endeared him to all who met him.

We still, and will always, miss you, old friend. Keep that eternal hobby room bench ready for when the rest of us join you.

I would like you all to know that I loved him like a father, if it where not for Augie Hiscano the model car garage would not be here today. I can’t really talk right now, this is just too sad for me. God I loved that man........

From David Pye

Hi all,

Augie was one of the greatest, so I heard, with animals and kids. They all loved him, be it a dog, a cat, or a child. My personal experience with this came in 2001 when I met him and introduced him to my then-three-year-old son, Steve. Augie treated Steve like a favorite grandchild, and it seemed to come naturally to Augie. Although Steve had no idea who Augie was, in the hobby, Steve had a certain, almost immediate fondness for Augie. Quite unusual, I assure you.

Steve and Augie generated a chuckle or two at the 2001 GSL auction when Augie strode down the aisle with his long-ago-award-winning car, to be auctioned. "Hi, Uncle Augie!" a young voice shouted. The gentleman turned and winked at an excited three-year-old.

I know of the numerous awards, the talent, the models, and a lot more of Augie. But, when he winked at Steve, I felt I knew the man. He had more than a talent, which a certain number of us possess, he had a way with people to which very few can compare.

He will be sadly missed.

From Steve Dill

In reading the messages here today I'm deeply moved by what has become a common voice of many in our hobby. Of how one man has touched the lives of so many others. Many have said that they have no words to describe their feelings. But a couple come to my mind. Love and Friendship. I believe he loved our hobby, in that he put so much of his life into it. I believe he loved his work, because you could see it in his craftsmanship. But in my opinion, he loved the people that he came into contact with the most. He never forgot you. No matter how long it would be between times that your paths crossed, he remembered you. And he would take up with you right where he left off. I don't believe he ever met a stranger, because that’s the way he was. He always made you feel like you were the most important thing going on in his life, right then. He did with me, and I witnessed this same behavior with those that I saw around me, as we sat in awe watching Augie work out a piece of tubing on his portable lathe for everyone to see (he kept no secrets).

He was a very talented man, but more than just with lathe and metal. He had a genuine God given talent with people and he was the same man every time you saw him. These are qualities that are found in few people today, and in my mind, are most memorable about Augie. And that is what I'm going to miss the most.

From Art Anderson

A great shining light in the collective hobby rooms all over, has gone out! Augie, you were the inspiration for so many of us, a friend to those of us you may never have even met. Your quiet, unassuming manner, ready smile, and the ease with which you gave building advice, even critiques that were not at all critical will be treasured by all of us.

My sincere and sorrowful condolences to Carol and Augie's family.

GSL just won't seem the same this year. Art Anderson

My personal memories of Augie are far more at a distance than many. I do remember seeing pictures of his RP winner in either Car Model, Rod & Custom Models (?) or both way back then, and thinking, I'll never be able to get that far (and I never have, but that's because of the subjects I've always built). Then, to meet Augie at GSL the very first time, which must have been what, 1994 or so, and to listen to him, and observe his interaction with others….. what an unassuming icon of this hobby!

Of course, I still remember in '97, when he and Alex Smith from Lafayette (the younger guy with the gorgeous 1930 Bowes Seal Fast Miller Indy Winner) got to meet up. Alex, whom I'd known since he was a 7th grader haunting the hobby shop I'd owned for about 10 years before going full-tilt into resin, was absolutely blown away by this personage, whom he'd never met, spending time discussing the finer points of scale modeling. That was truly a cross-generational moment, Alex and his wife talked almost incessantly about meeting Augie, all the way back to Indianapolis on the airplane. Needless to say, Augie made a tremendous impression on them. Art Anderson

Folks, we've all had a night of rest now, and have begun to digest the sad news of the loss of one of the truly great people in what is, I believe, the greatest hobby in existence. This hobby, passion if you will, for at least trying to come up with that next "killer" car in miniature, is one that transcends the ordinary boundaries of generations, race, religion, even national borders--in short, one of the truly universal pastimes that encircles this globe we all share. Every so often, into each life, someone comes along, quiet and unassuming, someone who becomes an inspiration not by what he says, not by somehow surrounding himself with "groupies" or some adoring retinue; but rather by what he's done, has done, and would do. Almost always, that sort of 'someone" does this in a quiet, unassuming manner, seemingly slipping out of the crowd to zero in on you, me, or another builder, and simply by his presence, his sharing a brief moment or two, leaves a sense of true friendship and an exhilarating feeling of inspiration behind.

In this spirit, I want to dedicate this Saturday night's PSAB model car chat to our sharing of memories of Augie Hiscano, of your sharing anecdotes of meeting him, and as so many of you of course perhaps never had such an opportunity, your moments of inspiration from the models of his you have seen in print, or perhaps in person.

PSAB Model Car Chat room will be dedicated to celebrating the life of Augie Hiscano and his impact on model car building, on us, and on the hobby in general this Saturday night, April 23, 2005. PSAB is of course, open 24/7, and we generally get started by about 7:30PM Eastern Time (US). I have no idea how many we can fit in there, but I know that I've never seen the room filled to capacity.

Of course, our community reaches far beyond the borders and coastlines of the United States and Canada, so I especially invite all of you who are from other lands, overseas, to join with us in this, a celebration of, and tribute to, one of the finest ambassadors of our hobby we could ever have hoped to have.

Regards all, Art Anderson

This is truly sad news. I had the pleasure of meeting Augie at GSL 2003 and he was a wonderful person. Meeting Augie was definitely a memorable highlight. He took the time to chat with me about model building and share his ideas. What a great guy. He also showed me around the museum - it was like a personalized tour.

We have learned so much from Augie, and his contributions have meant such a great deal for the hobby. We'll all miss him a lot. My deepest sympathy for Carol and family.

From Paul Wehner

Augie was our guest demonstrator at the Atlanta NNL for about the last four years. I spent an enjoyable hour with him last year, at our hospitality room after the NNL. We talked like we'd known each other for years....

He regaled me with tales of the early days of the hobby, and his adventures with the Revell contest. We then talked about misadventures with our families, and how much he enjoyed retirement in south Florida.

He was also a driving force in the model train hobby. He volunteered countless hours every year to help in setting up a Christmas train display at a local mall. He was tickled pink that he was able to do work no one else had the ability to do.

I saw him at this year's Birmingham NNL, and we talked for a few minutes. He gave me a catalog for where he had been buying his milling equipment. Although it's likely I'll never turn my own parts, this catalog will now always be treasured by me.

As so many others have said, Augie could strike up a conversation with anyone and make you feel like you had known him forever. I think he truly enjoyed being an ambassador to our hobby, and the respect we all gave him.

Augie, you were a true gentleman and a scholar, and will truly be missed.

From John Larkin

I can't begin to express the sadness I'm feeling right now. Augie was

my "hero" in the '60s, a "bigger than life" entity on the pages of a

magazine, and was so far removed from East Tennessee that I never

imagined ever seeing his work first hand, let alone meeting him.

Little did I know that some 30 years later, not only would we meet and

become friends, but he would become the same kind of inspiration, and

"hero" to my son, Trae, that he had been to me. His contribution to

this great hobby truly spanned generations, and my family is proof!

Less than two months ago, at the Birmingham Classic, I walked up to

them to find Augie explaining to Trae how he had created the delicate

"knurl" on some parts of the miniature machine gun he had built, and

how surprised he was that Trae had even noticed the knurl to begin

with. I will miss that smile, that voice, and his willingness to

share anything he knew with anyone who was interested. His work was

great, but it pales in comparison to the kind of person he was.

God Bless you Augie. Rest in Peace......my hero.

John Larkin

From Tim Kolankiewicz

I was really blown away by the sad news yesterday. I met Augie when he first came to the Birmingham Classic I believe in '95. He was always a fixture at our show and will be sorely missed.

As others have mentioned he was great at "working a crowd" sharing his exceptional knowledge he had gained from building models and his life in general. Something that he was often heard saying sticks with me the most: "treat every piece like it was a model in itself" if you do that, you'll build a winner every time. It's very true.

Here are a few pictures relating to our friendship...

Augie wanted me to design a flyer for him to hand out when he started to do his machining tour after he was inducted into the Model Car Hall of Fame, a project I gladly accepted.

At the GSL in '99 I was at the auction and this piece came up, and I had to have it. When the bidding was over, Augie came up and said that I was the one who he really wanted to have it.

This is a test shot for some engine pieces that are in the green roadster he built.

In Birmingham last year, I shot the pictures for the show coverage. Once it was winding down I was thinking, did I miss any really great models. Augie's models were on his table in the vendor area where he was giving machining demos. He had just finished the purple bike and was pretty far along on the other bike. He was so excited, in his typical humble way, that we would want to take a picture of his little motorcycles for the coverage. It came out as my favorite picture of the day.

I will deeply miss him as will all the others he touched over the years. Now go build something, that's what he would want.

Tim

From Charlie Kroll

Just wanted to share my memory of Augie with you. I met him for the first

time in Toledo a few years ago. It was like meeting a superstar for me. I

was too young to remember his contest builds from the 60's but his stuff

featured in Scale Auto just blew me away. We talked for a few and I was

as happy as a kid in a candy store. The next year I went right to his table at

the NNL to see what he was working on. As I peered over the table I hear a

noise and see this tire spinning on a drill. Then Augie says watch this, then

turns off the motor and the rim is still spinning. I smiled and laughed and

so did he. He had made the neatest spinner that I have ever seen. The man

could build anything. That is really the only contact that I had with him I

hope that you can please add this to the archives of the Museum.

Thanks, Charlie Kroll

From Tom Geiger

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Augie Hiscano earlier today. He was a true role model for the hobby, not even taking his skills and talents into account. He was just a good blue print for a human being. I originally met Augie at an AMS Convention in Pennsylvania back in the dark ages (1993) of modeling. He took great pride in showing me his red '34 Ford street rod. It was my first taste of modeling, to that degree of scratch building detail. I couldn't believe that Augie had a perfectly good plastic body, but took the time to replicate it in brass. Now I understand why. We didn't cross paths again until Augie hit the show trail with his lathe demonstrations. I met him at GSL 18 in 2001, and attended his seminar. I was in awe, but aside from his talents, I was immediately drawn to his enthusiasm and genuineness towards everyone. It was impossible not to instantly like the man. He must have talked to 100 people that day, but the next morning he smiled and said, “Hello Tom!”

After the GSL, my friend Bill Barrett and I decided to drive down to Bonneville. We knew it wasn’t race season, but we expected to see something that would make the trip worthwhile. As those who’ve been there “off season” know, there’s absolutely nothing there but salt. We were standing there all disappointed and a Ford Explorer pulls up with Augie and Carol inside. Augie pops out and says, “Hi Tom and Bill!” It made our day. It’s still a running joke between Bill and I. “What’s at the Bonneville Salt Flats? AUGIE HISCANO!!” He made the trip worthwhile. I wasn’t close to Augie or in touch with him other than our meeting at a number of shows after that. One year, my club mate Frank and I took the elevator to the hospitality suite at the Masscar show in Massachusetts. As the elevator door opened, there was Augie. With a big smile he said, “Hi Tom!” My buddy was floored. The famous Augie Hiscano KNEW me. I had to explain to him that Augie knew everyone and somehow managed to remember all our names. Augie was like that.

On the positive side, Augie touched many people in the hobby, as he must have in his personal life. He has left a very strong legacy in the International Model Car Builders Museum. His history, his winning models, stories and photos about him and videos of his seminars at GSLs. Augie will live on in our hearts and memories as well as within the walls of the museum. And, in my mind, that is the very most important mission of the museum and why it commands my full respect, commitment and support. I thought it would be nice to celebrate Augie tonight as he was when he was doing what he loved. He was very much in his element promoting and teaching within the hobby. So I will present a brief photo album of Augie’s Secret Auto Shop. That’s the way I’ll always remember him.

TOM GEIGER

Here's Augie giving Ryan Leach of the Tri-State Scale Model Car Club a turn at the lathe at the 2002 Fall Toledo show.

From Damon Bell

I have a couple of fond memories of Augie.... I had just arrived, and was walking around the NNL show when I heard a strange, faint "tinkling" sound above the regular din. I was confused for a second, but then I realized Augie was in the corner, whittling away at his lathe.

I had met him a few years before in the Revell-Monogram booth at the RCHTA show, where he treated me like an old friend, like he did with everyone. One thing he said there has stuck with me to this day. He was showing off his black roadster, and I can't remember if someone asked him or if he brought it up himself, but the subject of the obviously substantial man-hours he invested in his creations came up.

There was just a hint of annoyance in his voice, since I'm sure he had to answer that "Where in the world do you find the time?!" question way too many times over the years. He said, "What do you want to do when you get home from work? Do you want to watch TV, or do you want to build a car?"

From Dave Van

I can’t remember for sure but I think it was at an Atlanta NNL show. Augie was set up showing and making his parts as usual. In one session a young kid, young to me, 14 or so, asked Augie if you could make a ‘fart’ pipe for tuners. Augie had the kid come around to his side of the table and start working on a pipe. After it was complete, with some help from Augie, but the kid doing most the work with guidance, the kid asked ‘How much?’ Augie said ‘ You made it... its yours’. You would think Augie had given the kid a million dollars. It even made an impact on my 17 year old son! We now have a lathe and Augie’s book beside it.

God bless Augie.

From Mark Flys

I just want to add my condolences to Augie's friends and family.

I first met Augie at GSL in 1993, and at every GSL I attended after

that. As I was usually the "token Brit" at GSL we always had fun together.

Augie and his wife took me and my future wife under their wing on our

first visit to GSL and went out of their way to make our trip a

memorable one. Augie was always very generous in his encouragement to

other less talented modelers and was happy sharing his skills with

anyone who was interested. He was a great inspiration to many

modelers and his passing is a great loss to the hobby.

RIP Augie

From Vince Nemanic

As he did with many people, Augie tried to teach me about machining. At GSL 2001, he even sat me down and had me do a few cuts on his lathe after one of the demonstrations. To get me started, Augie even gave me some aluminum billet, and told me that if I didn’t have some machined parts on my entry the next time he saw me, he was going to kick my butt. I was planning to greet him this year at GSL by turning around and bending over, because I have no machining talent. If only I had gotten the chance...

Farewell, dear man, you will be missed by many.

From Bill Geary

I'm really shocked at the news of Augie Hiscano passing away. What's strange is that I had just logged on to the internet, (Hobby Heaven is my home page)

and your message is the first thing that showed. I learned from Augie about building each part as if it were a kit in itself.......... it has been what really helped me in doing the super detailed stuff that I do.

A funny story about Augie and Carol.............

I first met Augie and Carol at the Toledo show in October 2001. I had just finished the '58 Impala and it was on display at the table. Augie was busy doing his seminar of the Sherline Lathe but he took time out to look at the model. He apparently had heard about the "magical" things the model could do i.e.; the roll up windows. While he and Carol were standing there I demonstrated the windows and Carol took a gasp, slapped Augie on the shoulder and said to him, "WHY CAN'T YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT ??!!" I had to laugh as I really didn't expect that comment coming from the wife of one of the most amazing builders the hobby has ever seen!

I got to meet him again at the Birmingham show last year........and he and I had a really nice talk. He encouraged me to someday try to get to the GSL which I will finally be able to do.

This is quite a shock and it's hard to believe I'm typing this talking about Augie in the past tense. The Hobby will never quite be the same. :(

You take care my friend.

Sincerely, Bill Geary

From Ruy Villani

Oh my. That's really sad news.

I've had the honor to meet Augie and his wife in Birmingham, back in 2000.

I remember seeing his models in person and that's a modeling experience on

its own.

Even being a star among us modelers there, his simple manners impressed us

most. We shared a breakfast with him, Pat Covert and other modelers and we

were amazed on how familiar he was to us all. He was a wonderful modeler,

but more than that a superior human being. Sometimes some of us lose a friend. This time, all of us in this modeling community are losing a reference, for the hobby and for our own behavior.

From Alex Guagnelli

Dear Mark and friends,

I’m Alex from Mexico and I had the great opportunity to know Augie some

time ago at his store in Miami, he judged some of my cars and he gave me

counsel about the hobby and car models. I’m surprised about this notice and I’m very sad. Augie was for me a great teacher too, one of my great treasures is a picture taken by a friend and in it I’m with Augie at his desk and we are showing one each of our best models.

The first time I met Augie was in ´99 at the International Hobby Show in Chicago, it was a great coincidence because just before that I bought the October SAE and on the cover appeared his famous 1933 Ford Roadster, before this magazine Augie was not known to me. At the show we was walking around when suddenly in a booth we saw the ´33 in person! What a surprise for me! (I must say that I’m a true fan of modifying my cars and making machined parts in my little lathe and mill). Augie was there showing his car to a friend, I asked Augie if is was possible to take a video of the car and he said: "yes of course" I started to take the video and Augie took the car and he was explaining to me all the details of the car, he open the doors, turn the car over down to see the back details, I really can’t believe it, obviously this car was the best model that I have ever seen in my life!

Then, I’m back at the show next year and I saw Augie again at the lobby of the Hyatt, next to the convention center. The most impressive thing for me was the great memory of Augie. He remembered me! I said “Augie, I finished a model” and he asked me very enthusiastically "I want to see it". Unfortunately I didn’t take the car with me, but I had the chance to go to Miami some months later for a business matter, and I went to the Orange Blossom hobbies to see Augie again. Maybe you won’t believe me, but the first thing he told me when he saw me was "did you bring your car?" what a memory he had! Obviously this time I brought the car with me and I showed Augie. He liked the car and his critique was very positive, I feel very special this time because my car was judged by the #1 modeler in the world!

Another and very memorable moment was when Augie, by a coincidence, had his 32 1/2 Ford roadster at the store! Please imagine, I had his masterpiece in my hands!!

At the end of this same year I went again to Miami and I carried another model to be judged again. I remember some counsel that Augie gave me: "dedicate 2 hours daily to your hobby, don’t neglect your wife, or son, or your friends, they are the most important thing in your life. But you can work 2 hours daily, and you can tell your wife to support you”. These words have ruled my life and I remember them every day that I’m modeling a new car.

This was the last time that I saw Augie, in 2000. Sometimes we talked by phone, and especially when his wife had a problem in her eye, maybe 2 years ago, he told me everything is under control and his wife was fine. For me Augie represents an icon of model cars, he is an example to follow for every model that I build. I’m always thinking how to be better and learn more to obtain the best results and to be a better car modeler. I will really miss him.

God bless Augie. Best regards,

Alex Guagnelli, Mexico city.

It's sad to hear that one of the nicest guys I have ever met passed away. I had the honor of meeting him at the Toledo NNL several years ago and talked to him for about an hour or so about the hobby. He was there giving a demonstration on using the lathe and would make parts and give them away. With all the talking we did I never asked him for a part, but I guess I got something more important out of our meeting. I told him that with kids I rarely have time to build anymore and he said "If you only have time to build one model....HAVE FUN". I have built several models since then and swear by his words. I try to take that into every aspect of my life now and always have fun with what I do.

We'll miss you Augie...

From Ed Enberg

I first met Augie when I was a young boy. I would go to Orange Blossom Hobbies, where Augie was the manager, to race slot cars and hang out with my friends. I remember him always having a smile on his face, lending me a helping hand, and showing me the latest “trick” for my car. He helped open the world of model building to me, and for this I am very grateful. Years later, his daughter Debbie and I were in high school band together. When I graduated, I was unsure what field to get a job in or start a career. The answer became very clear one day when I was listening to a talk radio program. The speaker suggested that you get into a field that you were passionate about, possibly even your hobby. I immediately thought of Orange Blossom Hobbies. Augie spoke to the owner on my behalf which helped me to be hired. I worked with Augie for more than 15 years, and can truly say it was my honor and privilege. I have since co-owned and managed other hobby related companies. I will always give credit to Augie for my success in the hobby business for believing in me, giving me a chance, and for being my friend.

You will always be remembered with fond thoughts and that big smile on your face.

I am shocked and saddened by the loss of such a great great man.

I will always remember the first time I met him, at the NNL Nationals in Toledo in 2003. I was with Rick Hanmore, Vince Lobosco, Greg Nichols and Jim Devine, all well-known and well-respected builders. We ran into Augie coming out of the Outback Steakhouse and stopped for a chat. He treated me with the utmost respect and like one of the guys he'd known for so long, and I will never ever forget that. I will also never forget the next day, he actually made me an exhaust tip... I have not used it on a model yet, as I don't think my building skills would do it justice. Now I am thinking of just framing it, to always have that memory. In 2004 when we saw him again, he remembered my name and took the time to show me his latest work. I also cannot, not mention, his wife Carol who is just as friendly as he was.

Godspeed Augie.

Our hobby has lost one of its greats, a true gentleman. I was fortunate enough to visit with him at a few GSL's, and talking with him the first time we met was like talking with someone I had known a lifetime. When I think back to the first time I met Augie, a quote comes to mind I'd like to share:

That is terrible, I was so looking forward to seeing him next week. I am so saddened and shocked. Augie was and is an inspiration to all of us, especially those of us who machine. I am at a loss for words, I only knew him from meeting him at the GSL, but he was such a nice friendly person I felt like we were good friends after only talking with him for an hour. A true craftsman and always willing to share his knowledge, he is missed from the moment I heard the news.

From Mike Siegman

I can't tell you how devastated I was upon seeing the news about Augie. I treasured the little bit of time I was able to spend with Augie and Carol each fall when he came up to Toledo for the NNL. We became good friends thanks to his visits to GSL in the late 80's and early 90's, although we didn't see each other that often. While Augie's talent was undeniable, it was his friendship that most of us that knew him will truly miss! I don't know of anyone that met him that didn't like him. Another true giant of the modeling world will be missed.

I know that going on with the show this weekend will be tough, but as you said, Augie would have insisted. I can imagine all of the stories that will be told. I wish I could be there. Try to have a good weekend. Remember, Rick, Andy, Augie, and a lot of other dear departed friends will be watching and having a good time!

I was shocked to hear of Augie's passing! I only met Augie once and that was

a couple of years ago at the MassCar show in Taunton, MA. He had been

invited there to demonstrate some of his milling and lathe techniques. At the time

I had just about finished up a model of a 1937 Seagrave Tractor Drawn Aerial

and took it to the room where Augie was set up.

He took time to talk with me about it and give me some pointers on soldering

and working with aluminum on the lathe. I could tell that he enjoyed talking

to people.

I got a chance to see some of his work up close and it truly is masterful.

It's the sign of a true gentleman that can show his talent and still stay

humble at the same time. I will remember that brief encounter as one of the real

positive experiences of my modeling life.

From Darryl Gassaway

Mark I can't tell you how saddened I was to hear of Augie's passing. He was a friend to all of us in the hobby. It made no difference to him if you were a master builder or a beginner he was a friend.

Always the consummate gentleman and always willing to help with suggestions when solicited. His passing will certainly put a damper on what was going to be another great show. Even though he won't be there in person, he will be in spirit. As long as there are builders that remember him he will be with us. I think the new award in his honor is not only fitting, but is long overdue. I am sure that this award will be one of the most coveted awards given at GSL for many years to come.

My condolences go out to his family and to the entire modeling community. His passing has touched all. He will be missed not only by the people he met and influenced, but by future generations of modelers who will never have the pleasure of getting to meet and know him.

I'm truly saddened by this announcement. I've been

re-reading all my old magazines recently and have seen

his work from the early sixties and how it progressed

to the present day. He truly was an innovator and

always leaps and bounds ahead, trying new things, and

executing them with mind boggling skill. So many new

techniques are available today but he was doing

remarkable work, way before computer assisted design

(CAD) and CNC milling.

I'm typing this through tearing eyes because I know

his passing has saddened greatly many of my friends

who had the privilege to have met him and called him

pioneer that will never be replaced. I'll echo Mark's

sincere remark, we have to cherish our friendships

now, life is so short.

It was in April of 1999 at GSL and Augie was signing many pictures he had printed up of his gorgeous black Ford roadster and handing them out to any who wished one. I am sorry it took losing Augie to write to you, but I think it's important for you to know what he meant to so many of us. He was above all else, an easy going, friendly person. You just felt at ease talking to him, even upon first meeting him, you felt his warmth, and charm. He became a friend to everyone he came in contact with. It was just the way he was, and we are all better people to have known him. Augie will certainly be remembered for his cutting edge models, that took our hobby to a whole new level, with his incredible workmanship, and ability to do anything in scale, correctly and beautifully. I will remember Augie as a great person, and I was lucky to know him. We can all be glad, he was part of our lives.

From Yates aka Bill Conner

I'm just now reading about his passing. What a great loss and blow to the modeling world. I only read about him and saw his superior craftsmanship in the pages. I envy anyone who met and learned from him. It's up to you all to carry on his trade secrets and techniques. This kind of skill must be kept alive and handed down to future modelers.

May GOD bless his wife and family and comfort them during this time of loss.

From John V. Agugliaro

This is (bad) news to me. I met Augie at Toledo several years ago. I even had a one-on-one lesson in machining metal. I still have that little trinket I made. Like previously posted, Augie was an absolute gentleman and incredibly knowledgeable. Fantastic person.... fantastic builder.

Rest in peace.

From Steve Boutte

I met him for the first time in Birmingham 2002, & it was like we had known each other for years. He was always such a gentleman & never "talked down" to anyone.

His talent was worlds beyond anything I have ever seen before. I am truly saddened, but my memories of him will remain with me forever.

Steve

From Ronnie Keel

I too was fortunate enough to have met Augie once at Birmingham. Just from my short time with him it was very obvious he had never met a stranger. He just had a way about him that made it a pleasure to be around him and have a chance to talk with him. He will truly be missed.

From Jim Drew

His soft spoken manner and interest in the hobby was truly special.

I know he had come to a point in his life where he was just enjoying building anything that crossed his mind. It was nice to see someone enjoy themselves as much as he was during retirement.

God Speed my friend.

From Bill Goldbach

I didn't know him or ever meet him, but I know the name because of all the cool models he built over the years. I can tell by the stories you guys are telling, and by the photos, that he must have been a heck of a guy. Why do the good die young?

From John Burney

Augie was not only a legend in our hobby, but also a wonderful human being. His presence at our yearly show (Atlanta Car Model Enthusiasts NNL) will be sorely missed. My wife & I are moving to Miami Beach next year; when I told Augie of this, he offered to show me all that the region's car modeling community had to offer.

I, for one, will miss him dearly.

From Raymond Gallant

Please forward my most sincere condolences to Carol and the Hiscano family. I will always remember his work fondly as it is linked to my memories of this great hobby that Augie made even greater.

I never met Augie in person but I feel I know him from all the articles I have read about him in magazines and on the web at Sherline's website.

From Matt Fensin

A sad day for so many of us to hear of Augie's passing. His friendly demeanor always made me feel welcome at Orange Blossom Hobbies and later on at train meets. It is because of his friendliness, expert knowledge and ability to encourage that so many people, including me, have enjoyed the hobby of model railroading. I was surprised many years ago when I learned that Augie had gained national recognition as a model car builder rather than a model train builder -- he was multi-talented.

One Holiday Season while at Orange Blossom to purchase new model railroad equipment, Augie wished me "Happy Holiday" and gave me a Christmas Boxcar to run on my railroad. I was not a "big spender" but he treated me like one and I never forgot that. We will all miss him but with a happy memory every time we go to the garage, flip on the power pack and fire up the railroad. He made the lives of so many people richer and happier. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

craftsmanship was quite impressive to look at. He will be deeply missed by all

Bad news!!!!!!!!!

Another great guy of the modeling world is gone.....I talked to Augie just a few times in Toledo at the show, and for me he is one of the best of the best that I have ever talked to in my life. Anytime he would take time to talk with me and explain his work, and talking car modeling. I will remember him for long time. We'll miss you Augie......

Daniel

Augie was a very special guy being that he lived in S. Florida I got to see him more often than most although in the last few years since we lost our model shows down here I had not seen him for a few years. In fact the last time was in Birmingham a few years back but for however long between seeing each other he always remembered my name and always came over to see my trucks and ask me about mutual people we knew. He and his wife where very friendly and enjoyable to be around. I will miss him very much. Any information on the funeral??? When? Where?

My last issue of Scale Auto brought me sad news. I've have been to Salt lake City, in 1997, to attend the prestigious contest. One of the greatest things there was the chance to know Augie Hiscano and Carol. We had some conversation about models and technics. Besides being an ultra gifted model builder, he was a great gentleman.

Carol, Deb, Leroy and kids..Im so sorry to hear of Auggie's passing. What a kind and gentle man. 20 years ago, when I first met Auggie, I remember going to OB Hobbies, when he found out that I collected trains, he gave me a Lionel car right off the shelf..and told me it was mine. I still have it. To this day, I can still hear his voice. He and all you guys made me feel so at home. What a loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

I first saw Augie’s wonderful model cars in the pages of Car Model magazine, the Revell/Pactra contest winners. His models were an inspiration to all who built model cars in the 1960s, and continued into today. I met Augie in 1964 when we moved to Florida, at Orange Blossom Hobbies. When I had saved up enough money, I bought my first Moto Tool from him. I haven’t had contact with Augie in years, but I thought of him often. He will be missed. My deepest and most sincere sympathies for his family.

I was deeply saddened upon hearing Augie had passed away. As a customer of Orange Blossom Hobbies for over thirty five years (and he a customer of Tamiami Gun Shop where I worked), it was always a joy to run into him. He always had a smile on his face.

The last time we talked was a few months ago when we ran into each other at Barnes and Noble. I told him how much I missed visiting Orange Blossom Hobbies after it's demise, but he still made my day by just being good ole' Augie. That moment alone will always make me appreciate our last conversation the more.

My condolences to his wife and entire family.

He truly was an example of a REAL human being. We will all miss you.

God Bless you and all those who loved and admired you. I feel truly fortunate to have known you. I treasure the photo of you helping me machine a pulley at the Atlanta NNL. It’s on my model bench. I was saddened and surprised to read of Augie's death. My father started taking me to Bob Quicks Orange Blossom Hobby Shop in the early 1960's. When they moved across the street into the bowling alley, I was an avid slot car racer and Augie was building the track. This man was a tremendous help to me and a lot of fun to be around and know. Through the past 40 years I would see him at the shop and say hello. I'll never forget the Christmas party of 1964 at the O.B., the slot car track Augie made was the best and he must have been very proud to have created it. Happy Trails.

I am glad that I had the honor of spending some time with Augie at the Birmingham show, and sad that we have lost such a good friend, and pioneer of the model hobby. I can only imagine how many other lives he has touched the same way. If I were to say that I knew a nicer guy than Augie it would be a lie. He was, without question, an exemplary person. While I am probably the worst model builder in the world, Augie was always encouraging and quick to offer tips and suggestions.

A mutual friend once remarked "Augie is the only guy I know that has figured out how to get everything out of life" and I have to agree. It was always a joy to have lunch with Augie at Treat's (a small cafe in Miami Springs he frequented). He always had some new story to tell about a recent exhibition he attended or a trip he and his wife had taken.

Lunch won't be the same.

Thanks,

Augie touched us all with his upbeat and positive attitude...whatever the subject. I knew him for about 30 years and it was always a pleasure to receive a warm greeting from him when we would meet again. While I was always aware of his talents as a modeler, and they were exceptional to say the least, he was even more impressive simply as a friend and human being. We don't see many like him and his passing is difficult for us all.

Augie Hiscano - definition - class personified. I've known Augie since 1990 when we first met at GSL and he never forgot. Always willing to lend a hand or an ear with that big smile and he made you feel that you were not only his friend but were important regardless of your skill levels or participation at GSL. I was stunned when Mark phoned on Saturday with the news and he will be sorely missed by everyone who rubbed shoulders with a true giant of the hobby but more importantly a true man & friend. We must celebrate his life and gifts he left behind for us to treasure. He will never be forgotten and we know he has already passed through the pearly gates and has set up a hobby shop with the expressed intent of teaching others his considerable skills with that patient smile that was always present. How lucky we were to have been able to spend time with him. God speed Augie.

Sincere condolences to his ever present wife Carol and his family.

I first met Augie in 1985 while in Miami on business. After several failed attempts to visit Orange Blossom Hobbies I finally found time to get to the store one evening just before closing time. Augie was kind enough to stay late and allow me to browse to my heart's content. Our mutual passion for race cars and model trains allowed us to become and remain good friends despite the geographical distance between us. Tom Geiger

April 23, 2005

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Augie Hiscano. He was a true role model for the model car hobby, not even taking his skills and talents into account. He was just a good blue print for a human being.

I originally met Augie at an Automotive Modelers Society Convention in Pennsylvania back in the dark ages (1993) of modeling. He took great pride in showing me his red '34 Ford street rod. It was my first taste of modeling to that degree of scratch building detail. I couldn't believe that Augie had a perfectly good plastic body, but took the time to replicate it in brass. Now I understand why.

We didn't cross paths again until Augie hit the show trail with his lathe demonstrations. I met him at the Greater Salt Lake Championship 18 (GSL) in Utah in 2001, and attended his seminar.

As those who’ve been there off season know, there’s absolutely nothing there but salt. We were standing there all disappointed and a Ford Explorer pulls up with Augie and Carol inside. Augie pops out, “Hi Tom and Bill!” It made our day. It’s still a running joke between Bill and I “What’s at the Bonneville Salt Flats?

His history, his winning models, photos and stories about him and videos of his seminars at GSLs.

Arthur Anderson

April 23, 2005

I first heard of Augie when he won the Revell-Pactra National Model Car Championship way back in the 1960's, saw his work in the magazines at that time. Never, in my wildest dreams did I realize I'd get to meet him, not once, but several times at shows such as Greater Salt Lake Model Car Championships, and the NNL-Nationals in Toledo. Augie's gift of recall was amazing, how he was able to recall instantly those whom he had met only briefly, and then in a crowd.

Augie's work, and his easy outgoing manner were wonderful qualities, which endeared him to modelers everywhere. His willingness to share his ideas, his skills were legendary, just as were the models he created.

But, I am sure that his model car life was simply a microcosm of the way he carried himself in the larger world around him. Of that, you, as his family, have a wonderful heritage to treasure forever.

Godspeed, Augie! Having met you, I assure you that the pleasure was mine indeed!

Carol, and family, my sincerest sympathies to you at this time of parting. May God in his infinite mercy hold all of you close.

Regards,

I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Augie's family and friends. I never had the privilege of meeting the man, but I am a long-time admirer of his work. He was a craftsman of the highest order, truly one of the finest modelers in the world.

A sad day for so many of us to hear of Augi's passing. His friendly demeanor always made me feel welcome at Orange Blossom and later on at train meets. It is because of his friendliness, expert knowledge and ability to encourage that so many people, including me, have enjoyed the hobby of model rairoading. I was suprised many years ago when I learned that Augie had gained national recognition as a model car builder rather than a model train builder -- he was multi-talanted.

I always enjoyed talking about model trains with Augie at Orange Blossom. He was cheerful and patient, a real gentleman. My sympathies to his family.

When I graduated, I was unsure want field to get a job in or start a career.

Sincerely,

Ed Enberg and family
