John H. Schmidt, DVM
John H. Schmidt, DVM, who died Feb. 6, 2014, was born in Portland, Ore. June 21, 1926, to Charles and Catarina Schmidt.
He lived there until entering the U.S. Navy in 1944 after graduating from Grant High School. He served stateside and in the Pacific until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
He enrolled at Vanport College in Portland and later applied for and was accepted into the veterinary program at Washington State College in Pullman, Wash. While attending Vanport, he met Barbara Jean Mac Donald, the sister of a close friend and classmate. John and Barbara were married on Aug. 6, 1949 in Portland.
He received his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1952 as a member of the last class of horse doctors. His class was so named because they performed all of their basic anatomy and physiology study on the horse. All later classes utilized the dog for their basic study.
After graduation, he practiced in Stockton, Calif.; Merrill, Ore.; Walla Walla, Wash.; and Redmond, Ore., before settling in Klamath Falls in 1960. John retired from the mixed-animal practice at Klamath Animal Clinic in 1987.
John was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association and numerous vintage car clubs. He was also a life member of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He greatly enjoyed owning and working with livestock on the small acreage he and Barbara lived on. They had cattle, horses, mules and many dogs over the years. His other hobbies included working on and driving his old Fords, and hunting and fishing. He spent many deer seasons hunting on Steens Mountain and on a friend's ranch in Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, who died in 2001.
He is survived by daughter, Tresa Schmidt of Klamath Falls; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Marsha Schmidt of Canby, Ore.; grandchildren, Laura Schmidt of Portland and John Schmidt of Fort Myers, Fla.; brother-in-law, Ken MacDonald of Portland; nephews and their wives, Mark and Pam MacDonald and Bruce and Nancy MacDonald; niece, Joni MacDonald; niece and husband, Carol and Art Krueger; and nephew, Steven Schmidt.
