Dorothy "Dotte" Jeanette Shaffer peacefully departed this life March 1, 2013, with her youngest daughter by her side.
Dotte was born on Dec. 26, 1929, in Butte, Mont., to Delta Francis Dotson and Carl Reily Tadlock. She was married twice. Her first husband Denzil Darwin Schnabel was the father of her five children. Her second husband LeJourn "Lee" Miles Shaffer was her life's companion.
She was a lifelong and outspoken liberal Democrat who wrote many spirited letters to the editor expressing her views. She was a talented writer and published author. Her published works include "Going Home," an original short story published in "A Loving Voice: A Caregiver's Book of Read Aloud Stories for the Elderly," "The Heart Remembers," a book of original poetry, and numerous stories in True Confessions magazine. She was a member of the Klamath Writers Guild and the Quota Club, and served as a volunteer baby cuddler. She was known for her quick and sometimes racy wit and her abilities as a hostess. She loved books and parties and lilacs and laughing with friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lee and a son Paul Gilbert Schnabel.
Survivors include her four children Candace Schuler of Fort Wayne, Ind., Bruce Schnabel of Talent, Ore., Karen Schnabel of Medford, Ore., and Mark Schnabel of San Jose, Calif. She is also survived by beloved grandchildren Zacariah, Spencer, Megan, Lauren and Jared as well as a large circle of devoted friends.
At Dotte's request, no public memorial is planned.
She would be pleased by a contribution in her name to the Democratic Party or any cause dedicated to helping the vulnerable or disenfranchised of the community.
