Emmett Don Allen, age 87, of Sherman, TX, passed from this earth and went to see Jesus and that big pedal steel guitar in the sky on Monday, January 7, 2019. Don was born on December 17, 1931 in Wellington, TX to Charles Emmett Allen & Myrtle Bruns Allen. He married Nelda Jackie Allen on August 9, 1997 in Pottsboro, TX.
At an early age, he had a love and a talent for music. He played the steel guitar with his dad's band, the original Sunset Ramblers, in the Texas panhandle. He then served in the US Air Force with The Artic Air Rescue Service in Newfoundland Canada from 1951-1955.
While in the Air Force he won the "Tops in Blue" talent contest, which allowed him to appear on the Ed Sullivan show.
Upon returning to Texas, Don served in the civil service at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock for a decade.
There he started Don Allen and the Sunset Ramblers, entertaining in the Texas panhandle and area for many years, also starring in a popular local TV music broadcast sponsored by Walsh Food Service. During his long musical career he performed with such celebrities as Patsy Cline, Hank Thompson, Waylon Jennings, Ray Price, and Wanda Jackson just to name a few.
In the mid 1960s Don founded Allen Building Maintenance, which was a successful multi-state company for the next 20 years.
He became a Christian and was baptized in 1968. He was a member and deacon at Oakwood Baptist Church.
In the late 90s he moved to Sherman, TX. He and his wife of 21 years performed in the Saddle Tramps Band for 5 years and the Troy McKinney Hard Luck Band for 2 years. They were members of First Baptist Church Sherman. Don attended Clarendon Junior College and Texas Tech.
He is survived by his wife, Nelda Jackie Allen, his son Steve Allen and wife Anne, his daughter Donna Allen Isbell and husband Scott, his step-daughter Vickie Brunet and husband Octave, his granddaughter Stephanie Allen Hart and husband Dusty, granddaughter Brooke Ellis and husband Matt, grandson Blair Broadhurst and wife Erin and 7 great-grandchildren, three siblings Betty Collie, Mickey Allen and wife Marie, Gloria Jones and husband Dean and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett & Myrtle Allen.
Don was simply a lot of fun, a very kind, gentle sweet man, had a huge heart, an infectious smile, and loved big.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019, 2:00 p.m.at First Baptist Church, Sherman, Texas. Dr. Mike Lawson will officiate.
