Ann Nicholson Obituary

Ann Kilpatrick Nicholson passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, after a long and rewarding life. Ann was born January 19, 1940, on a rare snowy day in Galveston, TX. Ann was raised in Louisville, KY, and then later Bellaire, TX, where she graduated from high school. Ann received a degree in Microbiology from The University of Texas, where she was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Ann met the love of her life, James E. Nicholson, at UT and they celebrated 54 years of marriage on Aug. 26, 2015.

After her daughters were in school, Ann started a career of volunteer activities – among her favorites were the Head Start Program and Camp Fire Girl Leader. Ann was a lifetime Presbyterian and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church (now Covenant Presbyterian). She served as an Elder and started a program for senior ladies, Adventure Group, accompanying them on excursions to cultural events.

At age 50, she enrolled in nursing school and became a Registered Nurse. She worked at Wilson N. Jones Hospital and Austin College. A highlight of her nursing career was volunteering on a medical missionary trip to a village in Venezuela.

In addition to all things family, Ann's passion was food. She spent countless hours reading cookbooks cover to cover, researching restaurants and menus, and experimenting with adventurous recipes. Ann took great pleasure in sharing her cooking talents with her friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Herbert Campbell Kilpatrick and Marjorie Wheat Hahn, and sisters: Nancy Kilpatrick Tatum and Mary Wheat Hahn.

She is survived by her husband Jim Nicholson, brother: John Kilpatrick, sisters: Nell Hahn and Mary Frances Morris; her daughters: Nancy Jung (Don), Sally Dutter (George), Marjorie Qualls (Russell), and a special exchange student from Norway she claims as her daughter Nina Schjoldager; Grandchildren: PFC Robert Jung, USMC, PFC Anna Jung, USMC, Susan and Janie Dutter, J.T. and Keith Qualls.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Michael Benson and his staff for their tireless care through many difficult illnesses.

Memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sherman, TX at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Ann, smile at a stranger, offer kindness to a friend, eat good food, and support the charities of your choice.

She was a strong, witty, intelligent woman who loved to share stories about her girls and their families. She was very proud of them all! And so in love with Jim. I will miss her tales and laugh! Happy to know that she is celebrating with my mom and many friends who have welcomed her to Heaven. I love you, Ann.
