Peter Denison Obituary

Peter Bradley Denison, age 93, died suddenly on June 6, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Shirley (Thomas) Denison, and the son of Julian Mason Denison and Katharine Wheeler (Dunham) Denison. He leaves two sons, David Thomas Denison (Nancy) and Eric Bradley Denison, three grandchildren, Jace (Amber) Denison, Michelle (Paul) Darragh, and Steven Denison, and a brother William Mason (Carolyn) Denison as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ann B. Denison. Peter was born in New Haven, CT. but had lived with his wife in Somerset for over 60 years. They were looking forward to celebrating 69 years of marriage on June 16th. Peter was a retired speech-language pathologist. He was a severe stutterer as a child, and after having therapy himself, he chose to be a speech- language therapist, getting his Bachelor degree in History from Yale University and a Masters degree in speech correction at Northwestern. He worked for many years in Dighton-Rehoboth schools as well as working with handicapped children and adults in clinics and hospitals in Fall River. His hobbies were mountain climbing, bicycling, reading, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and traveling to distant lands. Always concerned for those in need, he was active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, becoming a Life Member in 1965, Amnesty International (serving as treasurer for many years of the Providence chapter), and the American Civil Liberties Union, as well as giving financial support to other groups. He was also active in his teachers' association at Dighton- Rehoboth, participating in the bargaining process for many years. An ardent humanist from adolescence on, he became a Unitarian, but eventually joined the Ethical Society of Boston and also the American Humanist Association. Due to restrictions caused by the coronavirus the present service will be limited to immediate family members. A Memorial Service will be planned for a later date. Anyone who wishes to make a memorial donation in his name may send it to any one of the organizations mentioned above. Arrangements entrusted to the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, Somerset. It was a shock to hear if Peters passing. He may well be one of the best known activists in the Somerset area. He championed so many important causes from the environment to education to caring deeply about people.
He was always well informed about candidates and issues. He often reached out to me about local and state issues that he was interested in. I am very proud that he included me as a person he shared his interests with. He will be sorely missed.

Peter was a wonderful man and an exceptional educator. I taught with Peter and was on several negotiating committees with him. He deeply cared about helping children . Although Peter had a stuttering problem he had a great relationship with his children. On one occasion I walked into his class and he was singing to his class not having any issues with his speech. He was a remarkable educator. My sincerest condolences to Shirley and the entire family.

Dear Shirley,
I am so very sorry to hear about Peter!! Very sad to have him pass away when we are all locked down. I hope to attend his service at some time in the future!!
I remember especially fondly Peter's contributions to our anti-death penalty group, Bristol County Chapter of Massachusetts Citizens Against the Death Penalty. His commitment to humanity and fairness for all was an important part of his presence in the community.
My thoughts and prayers are with you in this sad time!!! Please let me know if I can help in any way - [email protected].
With sincere condolences,
Rev. Susan Lee
