Gwendolyn Curry NEW CARROLLTON, MD. - Ms. Gwendolyn Curry, 61, of 6536 Landing Way in New Carrollton, Md. and formerly of York, died June 28, 2015, at the home of her aunt. Born February 24, 1954, in York, she was a daughter of William McClain and the late Nellie Rose Curry Robertson. Gwendolyn, affectionately known by her family as "Gwennie," lived her childhood life in York, S.C. and later moved to Washington, D.C., then on to New Carrollton, Md. She attended school in Washington, D.C. Upon graduation, she interned at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), where she was employed for 38 years. While at HUD, Gwen was Secretary for the General Counsel. She was most proficient in her work and was highly respected. This allowed her to travel to many places and meet many interesting and influential people. Her career was vast, affording her the opportunity to work under the administrations of five presidents: President Ronald Reagan, President George H. W. Bush, President William Jefferson Clinton, President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. During this time, Gwen met many wonderful friends and made long-lasting friendships that spanned over 30 years. After leaving HUD, Gwen went to work for the U.S. Department of Labor, where she was employed for three years before retiring on May 31, 2014. Gwen attended Salem Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where she received and confessed Christ as her personal Savior. She served on the Culinary Committee, Nurse Ministry and the United Women of Salem until her health failed. Upon anticipation of relocating back home to South Carolina, she renewed her membership at White Hill AME Zion Church in 2014. On June 19. 2015, much to her many friends' dismay, Gwen left her home and friends in New Carrollton, Md. and returned home to South Carolina. On June 28th, after a long day with friends and family, Gwen said "It's time to go. I have made my way back home and now I must go home." She said her farewell and went on to join her mother, Nellie Curry-Robertson and her daughter and love of her life, Ronita Nikelle Travers. She leaves to cherish fond memories her father, William McClain (Jessie Mae) of York, S.C.; four sisters, Patsy Allison, Bonita Walmsley, Tangela McClain and Tameka McClain, all of York, S.C.; a brother, Leon Roseboro of Kings Mountain, N.C.; her devoted aunts, Mary Dixon (Cleveland), Doretha Littlejohn (Otis), Joan Young (Bernard), Patricia Curry (Burce), Wyvonnie Curry, Annie Jane McClain, Willie Mae Nichols and Sarah McClain, all of York, S.C.; two uncles, Bill R. Smith (Maudestine) of Charlotte, N.C. and Grady McClain of York, S.C.; long-time friends, the Reverend and Mrs. Edward Robinson of Washington, D.C.; a god-daughter, Ebony Campbell of Washington, D.C.; six nieces, four nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. A pre-celebration Walk-Thru will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, July 2, 2015, at Wright Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Hill AME Zion Church, P. O. Box 1094, York, SC 29745. Funeral services will be 10 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2015, at White Hill AME Zion Church in York. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.
