Robert Lowell (Bob) Bromhal Obituary
Robert Lowell "Bob" Bromhal

February 22, 1940 - February 6, 2018

Robert Lowell "Bob" Bromhal passed away peacefully at his home on February 6, 2018. Bob was born on February 22, 1940 in Martinsville, VA to the late Maurice Lowell Bromhal and Virginia Lopez Bromhal. He was an Eagle Scout and achieved the Order of the Arrow. He graduated Durham High School in 1958 and went to Duke University on an ROTC scholarship. After graduating from Duke in 1962, he attended Officer Candidate School and served as an officer in the Navy based out of Norfolk, VA aboard the destroyer USS John R. Pierce. After leaving active duty to move back to Durham, he continued serving in the Navy Reserve for many years. Bob went into the insurance industry, starting with Home Security Life and staying with the company through many mergers until retiring in 1991. He then went into residential real estate, helping Laura build her business for 25 years at Simpson & Underwood, which is now BHHS York Simpson Underwood.

Bob was a selfless man, not defined by riches or status, rather by those who he helped and served and loved. He was a true gentleman, and a great friend to all. He was well-respected in the Triangle real estate market. He had his own special attention to detail, and if he thought he knew something, you weren't likely to convince him otherwise.

Other than his family, Bob loved the Duke Blue Devils, playing and watching golf, gin rummy, and pets. He went to great lengths to keep dogs alive as their health declined, because he loved them so much and it truly broke his heart when they died. While dogs were his favorite, especially his Sophie who passed away not long before him, he even took to loving a couple of cats. He found solitude with his koi pond, except for the voracious blue herons.

At various times in his life, he was active in the Kiwanis Club of Durham including a term as President, and enjoyed numerous rounds of golf and cards at Hope Valley CC in Durham and Carolina CC in Raleigh, and fellowship at the Stag Club and Sphinx Club.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Boone Bromhal of the home, his sister, Judy Lloyd of Winston-Salem his children Laurie (Gary) Daniel and Robert Lowell Bromhal, Jr (Nancy) of Raleigh, his stepchildren Emily (Townsend) Quinn of Dunn, and Will Stott of Raleigh, and four grandchildren, Mary Margaret and Kate Bromhal of Raleigh and Sallie Grace and Charlotte Quinn of Dunn.

Special thanks go out to Dr. Matthew Foster, LPN Melissa Matson, pharmacist Ben Muluneh, and the entire team at UNC Lineberger who Bob greeted as friends each visit. Our love and thanks to Will Stott who spent countless hours helping Bob in his last weeks. The service will be held Sunday February 11th at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at Carolina Country Club.
