Topsail Beach

Edith Lockett Whatley of Topsail Beach, NC, known to her family and friends as "Sis", passed away November 29, 2018. She was born in Bristol, VA on November 18, 1926. She graduated Wheaton College with a teaching degree in Music. She moved to Durham, NC and began her teaching career at East Durham Jr. High. Prior to moving to Durham she married her childhood sweetheart Dr. J.W. Whatley known to all as "Bud" or "Joe" on December 18, 1948.

While living in Durham she raised three children Amy Reenie and Joe, and was very active in several clubs and organizations. She was a former Chapter Regent of the General Davie DAR, a member of the Durham Music Club, the Durham Study Club, and the Durham Historical Society. For her outdoor activities she had a passion for tennis and being with her family at any and every event. She taught her family about love, respect, and the pure excitement for life. She and her husband moved to Topsail Beach in 2007, to be closer to two of their children and families. As long as she was able, she loved participating in the Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel Choir, the Topsail Belles, the Topsail Birthday Club, the Emma Anderson Friday morning Bible Study and the adult Sunday School.

At her passing, she not only met her Lord and Savior, but was reunited with her husband, her first born daughter Amy, and her granddaughter Amy. What a rejoicing that must have been.

Her surviving family members celebrated and honored her life with a private ceremony at the home in Topsail. The family wants to thank everyone for their love, support and prayers and wishes to share their mother's favorite scripture; Ephesians 3:16-19.
