Lee Castle

Lee Castle, 81, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away on October 21st, 2018 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Lee is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Kevin (Sarah) Castle and Michelle (Darrell Millar) Castle; his grandchildren, Zale, Dare, Addy, and Dante; and his sister-in-law, Arlene Castle, as well as many other beloved family members and friends.

Lee was a renaissance man who truly knew how to live his life. He was an attorney and advocate, a director, writer and actor, a youth leader, Ronald McDonald, an Air Force cadet, an armchair philosopher and politician, a jitterbugger, cheerleader and gymnast, a competitive pool player and less competitive poker player, a fisherman, skier and golfer, a stand-up comedian and master of the Dad joke, a Mr. Fix-It (who hated to paint), a die-hard Carolina fan, a rebel and a gentleman. He was a loyal friend whose superpower was making sure no one ever missed out on the fun.

Most of all, Lee was a wonderful 'get-on-the floor, roll-around-with-the-kids' Dad and Papa to his children and grandchildren, and a devoted, open, and loving Husband and Best Friend to Sue.

Friends and family are welcome to join a Celebration of Lee's Life on November 3rd, 2018 from 3:00-5:00PM at Clements Funeral Home at 1105 Broad Street in Durham, North Carolina. Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Lee will be forever in our hearts and minds, with a pool stick in one gloved hand and a royal flush in the other.

Prayers and peace to the family. Lee was one of the first attorneys I I I encountered after graduating from law school many years ago. He was kind and helpful to me while I was trying to navigate the legal system. When I think of Lee, I think of a kind spirit. May God bless him, Rose Mackritis

On how the memories flowed when I saw all the adjectives describing Lee. What a wonderful characterization of him! I knew him as many of them but I will remember him as the loyal friend who made sure no one missed out on the fun. When John and I were married, Lee and Sue were the first to extend their friendship to me as his new wife. Couples' bridge was a favorite monthly commitment to friendship; playing bridge wasn't the real focus.
Lee considered himself liberal and was tolerant and receptive to situations way beyond his upbringing and generation. John and I would come home from gatherings spent arguing politics, sports, and raising children at the Castle home, only to realize, that's not really what Lee thinkshe just wanted to hear you defend your own belief. He was a born attorney, able to argue any side of a position.
Though enlightened in his political and social opinions, he was loyal sometimes way past expiration point! Who else still has an AOL email account! In the era of computers and smartphones, I couldn't fathom how a businessman, attorney, constantly on-the-go person would still depend on a paper calendar on the refrigerator maintained by his wife. I look back today and realize that was his true revolutionary thinking. It was an unspoken acknowledgement that I yield control to the love of my life, whatever I decide to do, I want Sue to be doing it with me. May Sue always feel as loved as I witnessed.
