Dr. Rawson, 99, died at home in Sarasota 1/28/2014. He was born in New York City 11/26/1914. He received his BS degree from Harvard U and MD degree from Columbia U's College of Physicians & Surgeons. During WWII he joined the US Public Health Service and was assigned to the US Coast Guard as medical officer for a flotilla of Landing Craft Infantry ships, participating in the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, he served a residency in Pathology at the Hospital of the U of PA and was appointed Instructor in Pathology. In 1950 he became Chief of Laboratories at Norfolk General Hospital in VA, and in 1957 returned to the U of PA School of Medicine as Asst. Prof. of Pathology, subsequently being promoted to full Prof. He was noted for teaching the required course in Pathology to all students and for repeatedly winning the award for distinguished teaching. He served as dept chairman prior to retirement in 1982 and was the author of about 100 scientific papers, dealing particularly with cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. After retirement he volunteered at Mote Marine Labs doing marine mammal pathology, and published studies on the effects of air pollutants, carbon and mercury on the bottle nosed dolphin. For many years he was an active member of the Philadelphia and Sarasota Audubon Societies and was an avid birder. His wife, Mirjam, predeceased him in 1996. He is survived by three children, David of Berwyn PA, Gale of Devon PA, and Holly of Storrs CT, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
