Carol Williams Obituary

Williams, Carol Dorothy
Mar 14, 1940 - Mar 8, 2021
Carol Dorothy Williams, 80, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on March 8, 2021, in Tallahassee, Florida. She was born on March 14, 1940, in Norwich, Connecticut, to James A. Williams and Dorothy "Dot" Heilman Williams.
After graduating from Norwich Free Academy, she went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She later earned a Master's Degree in Education Administration from Nova Southeastern University. An outstanding educator, Carol taught court reporting and video captioning at Sarasota County Technical Institute for 30 years until her retirement in 2006. She loved her students and enjoyed celebrating their successes. Carol was SCTI Teacher of the Year in 1989 and 2005 and was recognized by the Florida Court Reporters Association and National Court Reporters Association for her education-related achievements. She published many professional articles about court reporting and authored a textbook, "Calling All Brief Lovers," that is still in use today.
Carol was a lifelong football fan and enjoyed attending Florida State University and Tampa Bay Buccaneer games with her friends and family. Since her teenage years, Carol loved Sarasota and spent many hours walking the beach with her friends at Siesta Key. She always enjoyed being physically active and had fun playing tennis in her retirement years. A dedicated member of South Shore Community Church, Carol regularly hosted small group Bible study meetings and generously supported the church's mission of community support and outreach. Carol was a proud and loving mother who cherished spending time with her daughters Ashley and Kimbal.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James "Alec" Williams, Jr., of Detroit, Maine. She is survived by her daughter, Ashley Grassia McNeal and her son-in-law, Brent McNeal of Tallahassee, Florida; and her daughter, Kimbal Grassia, of Sarasota, Florida.
Per her wishes, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to one of the following organizations: South Shore Community Church, 1899 South Tuttle Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34239; The James A. Williams Football Scholarship Fund, Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, CT 06360; or The Dorothy and James Williams Science Scholarship Fund, Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, CT, 06360.
