Charles Albert "Chuck" Margetta

Margetta, Charles Albert "Chuck"

Feb. 3, 1939 - Jun. 13, 2014

Chuck Margetta, 75, of Sarasota, unexpectedly passed away on June 13, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Laura Plum and his daughter, Alexandra Margetta of New Orleans.

Chuck was born in Erie, PA where he grew up, graduated from Cathedral Prep and Gannon University. After working in the family business through school, he became a CPA. After practicing accounting in Erie for some time he earned his MBA at the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia. He had a successful career as a financial professional in public accounting and industry. In the 1970's, he served as Chief Financial Officer of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) during its start-up years bringing Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers to generations of children teaching them to read and count.

Sailing was a passion for Chuck. Learning to sail at a young age, he raced sailboats on the Great Lakes, designed and built several of his own sailboats, and developed marinas in Virginia and Florida. He was a U.S. Coast Guard Captain, Master of Steam, Motor or Auxiliary Sail.

In 1986 Chuck came to Sarasota where he continued his accounting career and sailing activities on the S/V Morgana, most recently as a member of Bird Key Yacht Club. He also volunteered his financial experiences on various Boards and Committees, including Sarasota Youth Sailing Program, WEDU, Sarasota Yacht Club, U.S. Power Squadron, and Casa St. Marta.

Chuck is also survived by his mother, Marian Margetta of Sarasota, his sister Carol Bolla of Williamsburg, VA and still has family in Erie, PA.

Visitation will be held today from 4-7 PM at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 N. Orange Avenue, Sarasota. Funeral Mass will be at St. Martha's Catholic Church at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

Chuck had a passion for teaching children as well as for sailing. If you wish, contributions can be made to St. Martha's Catholic School Gymnasium Fund. And, the next time you are out on the Sarasota Bay, remember him.
