Margie B. Smith Obituary
Smith, Margie B.
1924 - 2018
Margie Smith, born Lillian Marguerite Burgess in Holyoke, MA, 1924, passed away in February at the age of 93 in Venice, FL. Margie was the daughter of Willard J. and Margaret Z. Burgess. She spent ten years of her childhood in Savannah, GA, but moved back to Holyoke with her father when she was about 12 years old. She graduated from Holyoke High School in 1942 and then attended Holyoke Secretarial College, which prepared her for work as a stenographer with Worthington Pump & Machinery Corporation. Margie married Karol W. Smith (1922-2007) in South Hadley Falls, MA, in 1948. Margie and Karol's first home was in South Hadley Falls but they would later move to River Vale, NJ, and then Wolcott, CT. Over the years Margie dabbled in oil painting, playing the recorder, square dancing, and playing bridge. She tolerated annual summer family camping trips and made awesome Toll House cookies. After Karol retired, the couple chose to move to a warmer climate. Margie and Karol lived in Savannah, GA, briefly before landing in Venice to spend their final years. They were members of the Jacaranda West Country Club where they enjoyed playing golf. For a time Margie volunteered at the Jacaranda Public Library. She was an avid reader of detective fiction, loved working on the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle, and really enjoyed retirement in Florida. Margie is survived by her three sons—Corey of West Palm Beach, FL, Glenn of West Hartford, CT, and David of Berkeley, CA—and four grandchildren. Margie's ashes will be interred near her husband's in the Memorial Garden at the Venice Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Venice Presbyterian Church, 825 The Rialto, Venice, FL 34285 or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
