Dreffin, Roger S.

Roger S. Dreffin, 94, of Sarasota, passed away peacefully on New Year's Day, at home, with family present.
He was born March 22, 1924, in Oak Park, Illinois, youngest son of Henry A. and Marie B. Dreffein, of Wheaton, Illinois and Siesta Key, Florida.
Roger graduated from Oak Park High School, where he was an Eagle Scout, elected to the Order of the Arrow. He began his college career at Cornell University, from which he went on to serve as radio operator in the Signal Corps of the US Army in Guam. After the war he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and spent most of his working life as an electrical engineer on nuclear reactors for American Machine and Foundry in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Locally Roger was a longtime fan and supporter of La Musica; and the New College Music festival, serving on the board, as well as being chairman, in the 1970s. For thirty years, he and his family had a summer home on Slick Rock, in Brevard, NC.
Roger is survived by his wife of 70 years, Patricia V., of Sarasota; two children: Desi Dreffin of Osprey (John Parks), and Scott Dreffin (Lori S.) of Cleveland, GA.; four grandchildren; Eric (Laura) Dreffin; Matthew (Erica Weil) Dreffin, Megan Pappas, and Miles Pappas; three great grandchildren; Asher, Gabriel and Riley; his sister, Barbara Schwanke, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; and 18 nieces and nephews.
An ecumenical service was held Friday at Myakka State Park. Memorial donations may be made to WSMR.
