Susan Schayes, of Sarasota, FL, a retired U.S. foreign service officer, died January 20, 2019. Susan attended the University of Washington and worked with the Peace Corps in Niger and with USAID on food aid programs. She developed a generation of foreign service agricultural officers, serving as the Foreign Agricultural Service's Deputy Administrator for Foreign Service Operations, and as the Agricultural Counselor at U.S. Embassies in India, Kenya, the Dominican Republic, and Turkey. As a retiree, she volunteered with SILL's global issues forum. She was an accomplished photographer, ceramicist, and enjoyed mahjong, the symphony, opera, and the Grateful Dead. Devoted to her late parents, Dorothy and Stanley, Susan is survived by a brother, Michael, his wife Katharine, nieces Sarah and Emily, and great niece Alexis and devoted friends all over the world.
