Andrew Hunter Obituary

Hunter, Andrew
Aug. 10, 2010

Andrew Adie Hunter, 80, passed away August 10, 2010, at his home in Panama City.
Born March 14, 1930, in Long Beach, Calif., to then Lt. George P. Hunter (Rear Adm. U.S.N., Ret.) and Andrea Wright Adie Hunter, Andrew traveled extensively with his navy family as a youth. He graduated from Noble and Greenough Academy, Dedham, Mass., in 1947 and Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., in 1951 with an A.B. in economics, money and banking. Employed by First National Bank of Boston, he took a leave of absence to serve his country during the Korean conflict. Graduating from the U.S. Naval School (Officer Candidate), Newport, R.I., Andrew served for three years as a line officer on various aircraft carriers in the U.S. Pacific fleet. He served as watch officer, air intelligence officer, gunnery officer and officer of the deck (underway); he left military service with the rank of lieutenant. Returning to his banking career with First National Bank of Boston, Andrew worked his way through the credit department into the investment division; served as treasurer to the Old Colony Trust Co., as the new business officer to the personal trust division and finally as a member of the international trust division, serving members of Lloyd's of London. After leaving First National Bank of Boston in 1985, Andrew served as president and treasurer of Enterprise 2000 Inc., a company providing capital for investors; and formed his own business as a personal financial counselor while maintaining his involvement with the Association of Lloyd's members as a regional representative.
Along with his career demands, Andrew made time to invest in numerous interests and served on boards and committees like the Boston Chamber of Commerce, the finance commission of the city of Boston, Young Republicans, the American Red Cross, the Visiting Nurse Association of Boston Foundation, and the English-Speaking Union of the United States. Andrew devoted much of his time and talent to his dearest affiliations, Harvard class of 1951 (class committee treasurer from 1971 to present), the U.S.S. Constitution Museum Foundation (trustee from 1973 to 1995) and a member of the Vestry of the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Late in his life, Andrew energetically gave himself to Emmanuel Church in Welaka as its treasurer from 1995 to 2000 and to St. Patrick's Episcopal Church of Panama City. He also supported the Florida Lighthouse Association and served the Panama City/Bay County Navy League in various capacities, and was deeply involved in preparation for the commissioning ceremonies of the assault ship U.S.S. Mesa Verde and the destroyer U.S.S. Momsen.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Julie Hunter. He leaves to remember him fondly his brother, George P. Hunter Jr. of Panama City; two nephews, George P. Hunter III of Lynn Haven and Thomas A. Hunter of Tampa and their families (to whom he will always be "Uncle Andy"); his friends with the Navy League, his church family at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, an extended family of cousins and hundreds of friends around the globe.
A memorial liturgy (all welcome) will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 21, with the Rev. Julia Phillips presiding at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 4025 E. 15th St., Panama City. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the U.S.S. Constitution Museum Foundation, Boston, or the American Cancer Society is suggested.

When I started working at the USS Constitution Museum in1987, Andy was in the office every day serving as the Museum's head of finance. He not only supervised the effort from a Trustee's perspective, but rolled up his sleeves and helped during a time of staff transition. He gave generously of his time while demonstrating his love of "Old Ironsides" and support of the Museum's efforts to share these extraordinary stories of naval service. His gentle words and manners paired with his deep commitment made him a strong friend of the Museum. Andy always kept an eye out for books of interest to the Museum's library, and he gave many fine volumes that are on our shelves today. We remember Andy fondly for his dedication, helping the USS Constitution Museum reach the next generation with powerful stories of the commitment and teamwork that shaped our nation in its early days.
