Goldstein, Rita

Rita Goldstein, 87, died peacefully in Sarasota, on May 19, 2015, surrounded by her children. She was an artist, a dog lover, a world traveler. She was the wife and partner of her beloved Norman, who predeceased her. She was one of a kind.
Mrs. Goldstein was born in New York, on January 13, 1928, the only child of Leon and Clara Baras. She graduated from NYU in 1948, and married one month later. She is survived by her children, Sandee Custen (Calvin), Diane Weiss (Robert), Mark Goldstein (Camilla),and Richard Wilkof; grandchildren Jared, Seth and Molly Wilkof; Michael (Sarah), Matthew (Taylor), and Ethan (Katie) Weiss; and Zoe and Maya (Dave) Goldstein; and 1 great grandchild, Linnea Grace Weiss.
Mrs. Goldstein came to Sarasota with her husband and 3 small children in 1959, and volunteered tirelessly in support of various child centered activities. Among other things, she was a volunteer art teacher at Southside Elementary for many years and president of the PTA. She was also an active leader of the Sarasota Swim Club, worked at meets, and designed many of the meet patches and programs. Mrs. Goldstein was a long-time docent at the Ringling Museum of Art, and one-time president of the women's auxiliary of the Sarasota medical association. In addition, she was a prolific artist, and her beautiful paintings hang in homes all over the United States, and England.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services are private.
