Michael Allen Oakes, age 78, of Sheridan, passed away Monday, February 8, 2021 following injuries received in a automobile accident. The son of Allen Clarence & Dorothy Mae (Wallace) Oakes, he was born on August 29, 1942 in Detroit. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Francis Marion during the Vietnam War. On September 21, 1961, in Allen Park, he married Claudia Elaine Haskell and together they enjoyed 59 years of marriage and raised three children. Michael worked as a corrections officer at the Riverside and Michigan Reformatory Correctional facilities in Ionia and had been active in Scouting for many years, having been a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award (awarded to adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth). He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Allen Oakes; and a grandson, Kyle Oakes. Surviving are his wife, Claudia Oakes; their children, Tina Anderson and Michael Oakes and his wife Tracy; six grandchildren Amber Schnur (Oakes) and her husband Daryl, Madison Parkison (Anderson) and her husband John, Natalie Davenport (Anderson), Pete Anderson and his wife Emily, Sean Oakes, and Ksathy Miller (Anderson) and her husband Damien; four great-grandchildren Luka Davenport, Abigail Schnur, Karina Davenport, and Dorothy Anderson (with three more due this year); a sister, Patricia Astorino; and several nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Memorial services are being planned for a later date.
