Mabel Bishop Obituary

LOGAN - Mabel Michaelis Bishop, age 94, passed away on Dec. 1, 2008, in Providence, Utah. She was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Garland, Utah, to Alfred Arthur Michaelis and Ida Mable Cannon Michaelis.
Mabel grew up in Garland, graduated from Bear River High School and attended one year at Weber College, Ogden, Utah. She graduated in June of 1937 from Utah State Agricultural College (USU), receiving a bachelors degree in textiles and clothing with a minor in English as well as a secondary teaching certificate.
She married Theral Vernon Bishop on June 16, 1937, in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived in Garland, Utah, until 1956 when they moved to Logan. Theral passed away on Oct. 11, 1997.
She supported her husband and her country while Theral served in the military for four years during World War II and for two years during the Korean Conflict. During this time they lived briefly in Northern California, Washington and Colorado.
She worked with her husband for a number of years in his State Farm Insurance office.
Mabel was an active, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her first calling was as a Sunday School teacher when she was in high school, after which she continued to serve in a variety of positions in ward and stake organizations. She served for five years as an officiator in the Logan LDS Temple.
She was a member of Literary League, a member of Old Main Society and American Mothers as well as several neighborhood and community clubs.
Mabel was a devoted wife and mother whose priorities were always her family and her church. She will be remembered as an especially dependable friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed by the many whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her son, Dr. T. Michael Bishop and his wife, Eleanor (Emie) of Millville; her daughter, Linda Ann Bishop Steele and her husband Donald of Logan; 10 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Vada Lee Frisby of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and a brother, Robert A. Michaelis and his wife Sandra of Garland, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter, Carol; her parents; a brother, Arthur Dale Michaelis; three sisters, Eulalia Michaelis, Fay Michaelis Barton and Pauline Michaelis Jensen; and one grandson, David Bishop Steele.
The family wishes to thank Steven Salisbury, M.D., and the staff of both the Cache Valley Assisted Living Community and CNS Hospice for their kind care during the last months of mother's life.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 E. 400 North, Logan. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Garland City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Nelson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LDS church Perpetual Education Fund. To Mabel's family,
My daughter, Mary, and I were Mabel's visiting teachers before we moved away. It was a gift and a blessing to us to be with her and feel her sweet spirit. She sent me a Christmas card every year and I treasure the memories I have of being with her and knowing her.

To Mabel's family: You probably have heard it many times by now, but we want to express our love for this dear, sweet daughter of our Heavenly Father. She expressed her testimony and love of the Savior in her countenance. We lived in the Logan 20th/Hillcrest 2nd Ward for several years.

Dr. Bishop and Emie: I send my condolences on losing your Mother. Bud lost both his Mom and Dad this past summer and we know that no matter how prepared you are, it is so difficult losing a parent. I think of you often and consider working in the ER with you at LRH one of the blessings of my career. Now working in Houston at the DeBakey Heart Center, I look back at the good old days in the ER at Logan as truly the good old days. God bless your family. Love, Mary Rich
