Beula Mae Sorensen Worthen
March 29, 1927 - February 8, 2018
Beula Mae Sorensen Worthen, age 90, died peacefully in her sleep Feb. 8, 2018.
I read; I wed; I bred; I fed; I read; I led; I read, read, read; now I'm dead.
Beula humorously penned this single-sentence summary of her life for her obituary.
Beula Mae Sorensen Worthen was born March 29, 1927, in Emery, Utah, the first child of Orval and Leona Sorensen. She loved books, reading every book in her school library and any other book available. In high school, Beula met her husband Hal R Worthen. They wed in 1944 shortly before Hal went to war. Their first child was born while Hal was gone. They were blessed with five more children: four daughters and another son.
The family moved to Washington, where Hal worked building dams. Beula often remarked that they went "from one dam job to the next." She served in various positions in the LDS Church. In 1963, Beula and Hal's marriage was solemnized in the Cardston, Alberta, LDS Temple. When Beula became a grandmother, she declared she didn't want to be called "Grandma," and her grandchildren should call her "B."
Beula and Hal moved to Gillette, Wyoming, in 1977, living there over 20 years. She supported Hal's efforts to start his own company and enjoyed writing by producing materials for that business. The travel company they built allowed the couple to tour places that she had read about, but never dreamed of seeing. In 1987, after 43 years of marriage, Beula buried her beloved Hal, having lost his 5-year battle with cancer. Following Hal's death, Beula wrote several books, a family biography and poetry. Her book "From Ending to Beginning" chronicled her first year of widowhood.
In 1997, Beula and her daughter Bonna moved to Hyde Park, Utah, to be closer to family. Finally, Beula was able to focus most of her time and energy on reading. Reading was her passion - during one of those years, she finished an astounding 478 books!
Throughout all the years, places and friendships, Beula's sense of humor was what people most loved about her.
Beula is survived by her children Wayne (Sandy) Worthen of Gillette, WY; Lynda Crow of Lapwai, ID; Jennifer (Mike) Warwick of Caldwell, ID; Shannon (Jose) Hernandez of Smithfield, UT; Bonna Worthen of Hyde Park, UT; and Tom (Gaylen) Worthen of Smithfield, UT. She leaves behind 17 grandsons, three granddaughters, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Lucille Halvorsen of Gillette, WY, and her dearest high school friend, Dora Dean Snow. Beula was preceded in death by her parents, Orval and Leona Sorensen, her son-in-law, Elmer Crow, and her beloved husband, Hal Worthen.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Hyde Park 11th Ward LDS Church located at 480 N. 100 West, Hyde Park, UT. In lieu of flowers, Beula's family has requested donations be made in memory of Beula Worthen to CAPSA, Logan women's and children's shelter, at the CAPSA.org
