Sherman Beck Obituary

Sherman Andrew Beck
March 29, 1938 - February 18, 2017
Sherman Andrew Beck passed from this life to the next Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. His wife held his hand, and his children surrounded him as he peacefully joined his parents, brothers and sister. We are certain that reunion is a sweet one.
Sherman was born in Gunnison, UT, on March 29, 1938, to Avery and Elvona Beck. He loved growing up on the farm and told his children and grandchildren many stories about his Huckleberry Finn-like adventures. He served as an LDS missionary in the East Central States Mission, serving primarily in Tennessee and Kentucky. He cherished those with whom he worked and served.
He exemplified his life motto, "Learn to Love and Love to Learn," earning degrees from BYU (BS, MS) and the University of Montana (EdD). He remained a devoted BYU fan throughout his life. He served and worked as a teacher and administrator in the LDS Church Educational System for 35 years. Teaching the gospel in his work, his home, and through his example was one of his greatest joys.
He was sealed to his eternal sweetheart, Marilyn Call, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 26, 1963. They are the loving and devoted parents of 10 children. Their oldest granddaughter gave Sherm the nickname "Punka," and for the past three decades he has been Punka to all who knew him. He considered himself a rich man because of his posterity.
Punka and Marilyn's posterity includes: Merilee (Calvin) George of Pullman, WA; Mark (Adrienne) Beck of Charlotte, NC; Heidi (Phil) Kesler of Smithfield; Michael (Kristin) Beck of Corvallis, OR; Heather (Mike) Oar of Smithfield; Sherman "Andrew" (Belinda) Beck of Taipei, Taiwan; Paul (Megan) Beck of Cary, NC; Jonathan (Alicia) Beck of Silver City, NM; Emily (Todd) Williams of Smithfield; Joshua (Sara) Beck of Smithfield; and their 47 grandchildren.
Punka loved people and was generous with his time, advice and compassion. His legacy of love will continue in the many lives he touched.
In recognition of his love for learning, please consider a donation to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund in lieu of flowers.
A public viewing will be held Friday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 S. Main St., Smithfield. A viewing for out-of-town guests will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the LDS chapel at 625 E 600 South, Smithfield. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net.

So sorry to hear of Sherm's passing. We were so blessed having had the privilege of serving with Sherm in stake callings in the Gresham South Stake. Sometimes there are no words for the feelings in the heart, but we learned so much from him. I was in awe every day that I worked for him at CES. He never ceased to amaze me. He always made me chuckle when he said he was going to clean off his desk. He would bring into his office a rather large box - push everything from the top of his desk into the box - tape the box closed - and exclaim "job done!" Loved that man. May your memories comfort you. Sending our deepest sympathy to you, Marilyn, and all of your family. Love to all of you.
