Larry Bakker Obituary
Larry John Bakker, age 77, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, January 9, 2019, while in Florida. He was a life-long resident of the Holland, West Olive, Grand Haven area.He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Eunice (Bloemers) Bakker; sons and daughters-in-law Matthew and Cindy Bakker, Jeremy and Laura Bakker; grandchildren Jenna, Delaney and Tessa Bakker, Savannah and Micah Bakker; his brother, Howard (Betty) Bakker; in-laws Vernon (Marcia) Bloemers, Sandy (Erwin) TerHaar, Margaret Bloemers; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Louise (Heerspink) Bakker; in-laws William and Jeanette (Harsevoort) Bloemers; sisters Nella (James) Assink, Frieda (Clarence) Johnson, Marjorie (Samuel) Van Raalte; brothers-in-law Melvin Elzinga and Ellwyn Bloemers; and his grandsons Zachary and Alexander Bakker. Larry was born September 8, 1941 in Holland; graduated from Holland High School in 1960; went on to Michigan State University's Landscape and Nursery Management Program, graduating at the head of his class in 1962. He was the Founder and President of Landscape Design Services, Inc. having retired in 2008. Larry served in many organizations related to his profession and the community in the past, including: Senator from Michigan for the American Nursery and Landscape Association, Board Member and President of the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association, Board Member of Youth for Christ and Holland Home Builders, Member of Holland Rotary Club and the Holland Fish and Game Club. In 1990 he received the Member of the Year Award and in 2012 the Half Century Club Award from the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association. Larry's faith was foundational in his life and family. Harlem Reformed was his church home for his whole life. He currently served as Chairman of the Harlem Reformed Church Scholarship Committee and had served as an Elder and a Deacon. A time for relatives and friends to visit with Larry's family will be held from 4 to 7 PM Thursday and 4 to 7 PM Friday, at Harlem Reformed Church – Compass Building, 6854 144th Ave., Holland, Michigan, 49424. A service celebrating Larry's life and faith will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 19, at All Shores Wesleyan Church, 15550 Cleveland St., Spring Lake, Michigan, 49456. Pastor John Nyitray will officiate. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Harlem Reformed Church Scholarship Fund, Outdoor Discovery Center or any .
