Jean Houston Obituary

Jean Stewart Houston
1934-2016
Jean Stewart Houston went to be with the Lord on February 28, 2016. Jean was born in New Comnuck, Scotland on October 1, 1934. She is predeceased by her parents John and Marion Young Houston. Jean is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Nan and Tom Burns, niece Helen Patterson and other nieces and nephews, most of whom reside in Scotland. She went to primary school at Bank School. She then went to Cumnock to live and work with her Aunt Peggy. Jean held several jobs in Scotland including Bus Conductor, Factory worker and Nanny. She then decided to attend night school and became a Secretary. She ventured to the U.S. over 55 years ago, arriving in Boston to live with friends Marion and John. She then moved to California with her friend Chrissie Robertson and then to her final destination Houston, Texas, where she worked for Shell Oil Company until her retirement. Jean became a U.S. citizen in 1995 and was an active member of First Methodist Church where she volunteered for many, many years.
Jean was a true "Scot" and her heart was in The Highlands. Her feet were on the ground. She was honest, fair and efficient - always taking care of business, but in the nicest way with a twinkle in her blue eyes and a pirate's laugh. Her many friends at Shell Oil Company and First Methodist Church will never forget her.
Jean was blessed to be cared for by such a gentle and loving care team of Marta, Mary, Angela, Adela,
Christina, Rosa and
Fernanda. We would also like to thank Houston Hospice who provided care to Jean that was invaluable and so caring.
A memorial service will be held for Jean at First
Methodist Church, 1320 Main Street, Houston, TX, at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 5, with the Reverend Ann Spears officiating. A reception will follow in the First Methodist fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Houston Hospice, First Methodist Church or charity of your choice.

I have been meaning to search for you dear lady and I am too late. The tears are flowing for you were one of the sweetest ladies I ever worked with. May you hear me in heaven that my love, admiration and heartbreak for you bring sweet memories.

Jean is and was a dearest friend. I have been her friend and known her since the early 1980's and was her neighbor. We laughed together, talked seriously about relationship issues, about news apparel make-up. had lunch together, stayed in touch when I moved from Houston and was away in another state. Her faith was deep and personal she did not push it on anyone. She lived it. She had many special friends in addition to her dear church friends & Shell co-workers.Some were from Boston, a couple who were also neighbors, several international friends.Had phone calls at least monthly or more with her sister. She was kind, gave her time on weekends to care for elderly woman, called weekly a friend who had developed a mental disorder , gave monetary gifts to various young people, crocheted Christmas gifts. She had had hurts in her life that she tucked away. Always kind and up-beat. I miss her. We lost her several months ago. And I am grateful that God took her at this point, she never would have wanted to live as she was.

I only met Jean a few years ago, but after only a short time you felt as if you had been friends for a lifetime. She could relate some of her life experiences and you would feel as if you had lived them with her. She was truly a lovely person. We all have a real guardian angel looking down on us. Those of us who were lucky enough to have known her will surely miss her. God bless.
