James Anderson Obituary

James Michael
Anderson
died at home in Bellaire, Texas, on August 31, 2013, after a valiant struggle against cancer.
Mike was born on October 27, 1955, in Pasadena, Texas to J.B. and Carol Anderson. While growing up in Pasadena, Mike was a conscientious student and an athlete, playing football and basketball, and running track. He established life-long friendships in the neighborhoods of Linda Lane and Parkside as well as at Sam Rayburn High School and later at Pearland High School. At this time in his life, Mike developed an avid interest in hunting and fishing, especially in the Texas Hill Country. He graduated from Pearland High School, Texas Lutheran College and South Texas College of Law.
Mike was an Assistant District Attorney in Harris County for seventeen years. He had a long tenure as the Chief Prosecutor in the Special Crimes Division before becoming the State District Judge of the 262nd District Court. During his third term, Mike's fellow judges elected him Administrative Judge for all the Criminal Courts. In that capacity he oversaw the creation of Veteran's Court, a third Mental Health Court, and the Public Defender's Office.
In the DA's office Mike met the woman he loved and married, Devon Ward Anderson. They have a beloved son, Sam, who is twelve, and an amazing daughter, Brynn, who is ten.
Always active in the community, Mike was a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the 100 Club, and the Board of Directors of the American Leadership Forum as well as an Elder at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Bellaire Little League, and Scouting.
In 2012 Mike was elected Harris County District Attorney and had time before his illness to reorganize the office and appoint an excellent staff. While undergoing treatment, Mike was at the office as often as possible to see that his initiatives were working.
Mike is survived by his wife Devon, his children Sam and Brynn, his parents J.B. and Carol Anderson, sister and brother-in-law Jan and Brent Bailey, niece Ellen Bailey, nephew Michael Bailey and cousin Charlyn Porter Williams. Mike also counted many close friends as family.
Mike's family would like to extend special thanks to Chris Hagerman of M.D. Anderson for the guidance and comfort he provided to Mike and Devon through the most difficult of times.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004.
In lieu of flowers, Mike's family asks that memorials be given to Big Brothers Big Sisters, www.bbbs.org or to the Harris County Drug Court Foundation, www.hcdcf.org.

Not sure what to say?

I miss you, my friend. You were the light in so many lives. My family was fortunate to feel your love and kindness.
Now, when I see pictures of Sam and Brynn I am sure that they have your light inside of them.
Devon has done such a good job raising your beautiful children. I know you have been there watching over and guiding her.

Anderson family
I was so looking forward to Mike being the D.A.
His house was caddy-corner from ours in Pasadena.
I recall a time when we was probably 8yrs old and us kids was playing on a lot where they were still building the new homes, Mike & i got in a little disagreement and he told me to stop it and i did cause i knew Mike was a tuff kid.
Last time i saw Mike and the family was at the funeral for my best friend's dad in the neighborhood we grew up in.
I was so looking forward to seeing that tuff kid bring honor & dignity back to the D.A.
Deepest sympathies

If life is measured by the lives you touch and the people that love you then, James lived and long and full life. The beauty of an unselfish life that is used in the service of others is that it is a life that is worth remembering. Faithful people are never forgotten. Malachi 3:16.

From my Mom, Rita Duncan...me, Cathy Duncan , and my daughter, Sierra Watts we send many prayers and condolences. Mike was a dear and loyal friend and colleague of my Dad...Judge Jimmie Duncan. And more recently helped my daughter with a family violence situation. My Mom is seriously ill also or I know she would have reached out to the family during your darkest hour. But know that between my Dad and Mike, they are surely keeping Heaven on time and in check. If there is anything your family needs please don't hesitate to contact me. Again we are sorry for your loss.

Having only knowing him for a short time while in his court, I learned that he was friendly, funny and a great story teller. His stories were sometimes so serious and other times slide-splitting hilarious. He treated his people like family. I had not felt much pride in working here until he came and made us feel that we didn't have to hide in the shadows and keep our heads down. I thank him for bringing that back to us. He will be greatly missed.

Mike was my boss, my mentor, and my hero. I wlll never forget the personal sacrifices he made to save the office we all love so much. His imprint will be on these halls of justice long into the future, as long as there are prosecutors who remember and pass on to others what he taught us: the great and solemn responsibility of doing your "level best" to secure justice in this, "the Great State of Texas." Devon, Brynn, and Sam, thank you for sharing him with us.

We first met Judge Mike Anderson when our 21 year old son was murdered in 2004. He treated our family and trial with such professionalism and respect. We have followed his career and voted for him each time. When our trial judge was assigned several we know who work in law enforcement said we had the very BEST judge in Houston. We couldn't agree more. Our prayers will be with your family. This world has lost a very good man.

September 5, 2013

My family was fortunate enough to have been neighbors with Mike and Devon. After returning one of their dogs that had escaped for the umpteenth time, we became friends. Our friendship quickly led to the sharing of many meals, family vacations, and campaigns. During this time, we witnessed firsthand how special Mike made all his friends feel. Never waiting to be asked, he offered help whenever and wherever needed. After our families moved away from one another, we saw less of each other. But, every time we ran into Mike thereafter, he made it seem as if no time had passed and our friendship was as strong as ever. I know Mike was blessed when he married his soul-mate. I also know that he was blessed twice more with the birth of his children. He was passionate about justice, as straight a shooter as I have ever met, and a person I am honored to have called a friend. And while my family is praying for Devon, Sam, and Brynn, we also know that Mike is up in heaven looking over them. I am also pretty sure he is up there right now asking what he can do to help.

Words cannot describe the loss to all of us. I met Mike in 1985 when I was Chief Prosecutor of the 248th District Court and he was assigned as my number 2 for 19 months. Those were some of the best months of my career. Mike was fun to watch work, had a great sense of humor and was good friend as well. He even let me stay over on that sagging bed at his house when we'd been out partying and I needed a place to crash. He has been taken from us way too soon. Watch over the rest of Mike.

I served as a juror in Judge Anderson's court in 2007. His passion for the law was very obvious. He was thankful and supportive of the jury. He spent time after the case had ended to answer questions and reiterate his appreciation for our
service. I came away from the experience with a greater appreciation for our legal system and those that make it work everyday, thanks to Judge Anderson. I was more than happy to cast my vote for him as DA of Harris Co and even more thrilled to see him win!! My prayers to his wife and children. May God hold you in his hands and comfort you at this difficult time.

I knew Mike from 5th grade on and he eventually became the judge who swore my son-in-law into the State Bar of Texas 9 years ago. I also lost a mother suddenly when I was 13 and every time I talk to my son in law I will pray for your family Devon. I know how to pray for your children having been through this tragedy myself. I was the one who at our 30th high school reunion for Sam Rayburn, had the child who is Sam's age. Mike and I were the only two 48 yr olds with a 3 yr old at home. Devon, God will take care of you and your family as he did mine. I know how to pray for you and I will everyday.

It was my honor to serve on a jury in Mr. Anderson's court in 2001. He was a fair and honorable man. He came into the jury room after the sentencing and spoke to us to tell us what a good job we did. Even though we were all hurting and crying due to the decision we had made, he made us feel better about it. I sure did enjoy you. You understood the difference between the "black letter" of the law and the spirit of the law. You always knew how to separate the wheat from the chaff when it came to cutting deals on pleas (eg. -there are true bad guy criminals and then there are numbnuts in the wrong place at the wrong time). You were an "old house" aficionado (as I discovered when we ran into one another weekend after weekend at those old-house fixture stores around town) and you knew how to have fun (and not get caught). You also had the great sense to convince Devon to be your wife. God took you way too young. But that's His call. You were strong and steadfast and I can only guess that you instilled those characteristics in your children.
You will discover that your new vantage point is an excellent one for watching over your loved ones remaining on this mortal coil. God Bless.
