ALBERT LAWS KIDWELL, 89, passed away on August 16, 2008 surrounded by his family in Scottsdale, Arizona. Albert was born in Auxvasse, Missouri on January 1, 1919 to Albert Lewis and Josephine Ruth Laws Kidwell. He attended high school in Caruthersville, Missouri and graduated with a BS degree in Mining Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines at Rolla, completed a MS degree in Geology from Washington University (St Louis) in 1942 and a PhD degree in Geology from the University of Chicago in 1949. He married the love of his life, Marian V. Rankin, on June 16, 1943. They moved to Tulsa where he was a Research Geologist for 15 years with Carter Oil Co Research Laboratory and then to Houston where he was a Senior Research Associate with Exxon Production Research from 1965 until his retirement in 1984. Al was an enthusiastic mineral collector for over sixty years. The Arkansas mineral "Kidwellite", was identified by him and later named in his honor by the International Nomenclature Committee in 1978. He was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1991. In the summer of 2006, Al and Marian relocated to Scottsdale. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marian, children: Bill Kidwell, Betty Evans, Pat Lown and Tom Kidwell plus 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM, Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church Chapel, 4455 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253.
